Iwate Prefecture (岩手県) combines city food culture, Buddhist temples, coastlines and caves. Morioka (盛岡) is a railway access point and a place to explore local noodles and a traditional dance festival. Hiraizumi (平泉) has Chusonji Temple (中尊寺) is known for Konjikido Golden Hall (金色堂). Miyako (宮古) is home to Jodogahama (浄土ヶ浜), while Iwaizumi (岩泉) has Ryusendo Cave (龍泉洞) offer different natural landscapes. Based on official information checked on 2026-10-29, this page compares area features, admission charges and visiting rules. Train services, visiting hours and temporary closures can change, so check official announcements before departure.
Key points
- City access and local food: Morioka can be reached by the Tohoku Shinkansen (東北新幹線). Local dishes include wanko soba (わんこそば) and Morioka cold noodles (盛岡冷麺).
- Hiraizumi for temple culture: Chusonji’s Konjikido Golden Hall and Sankozo Museum (讃衡蔵) use a temple admission-ticket system, with seasonal closing hours.
- Natural attractions are in different areas: Jodogahama is a coastline in Miyako, while Ryusendo Cave is in Iwaizumi. Being within Iwate does not make them part of one walking route.
- Check safety rules for the cave: Ryusendo has steps, does not allow pushchairs inside and has no toilets in the cave. It may temporarily close when water levels rise.
Getting there
Morioka Station (盛岡駅) is a railway entry point into Iwate from Tokyo, with relevant services listed in the Tohoku Shinkansen (東北新幹線) timetables. At Morioka Station, visitors can also check Yamada Line (山田線) information toward Miyako. The actual onward journey from these stations to temples, coasts and caves must still be checked section by section for the travel date.
| Travel theme | Area and transport consideration | What to verify |

Main sights and experiences
| Name | Features | Official notes (checked 2026-10-29) |
|---|---|---|
| Chusonji Temple (中尊寺) and Konjikido (金色堂) | Temple history in Hiraizumi, the Golden Hall and Sankozo Museum (讃衡蔵) | General adult temple admission 1,000 yen; 8:30 to 17:00 from 1 March to 3 November; 8:30 to 16:30 from 4 November to the end of February. Combined tickets for special exhibitions cost extra. |
| Jodogahama (浄土ヶ浜) | White rhyolite rocks and coastal scenery in Miyako | The city page lists a general vehicle-restriction period in the park from 1 April to 31 October; check that year’s implementation details with the city. |
| Ryusendo Cave (龍泉洞) | Limestone cave, underground lakes and an interior visiting route | Adults 1,100 yen, junior high and elementary school students 550 yen; 8:30 to 17:00 from October to April, 8:30 to 18:00 from May to September. The cave has steps, pushchairs are not permitted, there are no toilets inside, and rising water may cause closures. |
| Morioka Sansa Odori (盛岡さんさ踊り) | A traditional Morioka summer event with taiko drumming and dance | The city describes it as normally held from 1 to 4 August each year; check the official day-by-day programme for future years. |
Chusonji’s regular admission ticket is not the same as a combined special-exhibition ticket. The adult price in the table applies only to the standard ticket described in the research. For the areas including Konjikido and Sankozo, check the temple’s notices and admission categories for the day.
Ryusendo is not simply a question of opening time and ticket price. Its interior route includes steps, so wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility should pay particular attention to the published route conditions. The official rules explicitly state that pushchairs cannot enter the cave and there are no toilets inside. Flooding and rising water levels may also cause the opening status to change at short notice.

What to check before departure
Official sources include Iwate Prefecture’s tourism website for local dishes, Morioka City Government for the city and Sansa Odori, Miyako City Government for Jodogahama, and the separate visitor notices issued by Chusonji Temple and Ryusendo Cave in Iwaizumi Town.
In particular, confirm current train services from Morioka Station, connections to Hiraizumi and Miyako, vehicle restrictions at Jodogahama for the relevant year, and whether Ryusendo has temporarily closed because of rising water. Temple seasonal closing times and the cave’s internal steps also belong on the pre-visit checklist. Each region has distinct attractions, while transport must be arranged according to actual services.
