Arashiyama day trip: JR access, Togetsukyo Bridge and Tenryuji
Plan a visit from Kyoto Station to Arashiyama using official JR train and walking estimates, Tenryuji garden and hall admission rules, and flexible bamboo grove walking time.
Last checked:
An Arashiyama (嵐山) itinerary involves rail travel, walking through the neighbourhood and visiting temples. From Kyoto Station (京都駅), practical questions include which station to arrive at, how to fit the bamboo grove and Togetsukyo Bridge (渡月橋) into a route, and which parts of Tenryuji (天龍寺) require an additional fee. This guide uses Kyoto City’s official tourism information and Tenryuji’s website (checked 2026-10-28). There is no single official visiting duration for the bamboo path, so no fixed time to complete a whole-day itinerary is given. For a first Kyoto trip, see the Kyoto travel guide.
Key points
- Kyoto Station to Arashiyama: Kyoto’s official tourism guide describes the JR Sagano Line (嵯峨野線); a rapid train to Saga-Arashiyama Station (嵯峨嵐山駅) takes about 11 minutes, according to the reference time.
- Walking after arrival: From Saga-Arashiyama Station (嵯峨嵐山駅) to the Togetsukyo Bridge area, the official walking estimate is about 8 minutes.
- Tenryuji garden: Regular visiting hours are 8:30 to 17:00, with final reception at 16:50; admission for high-school students and older is 500 yen.
- Tenryuji temple buildings: An additional 300 yen is charged on top of the garden admission fee. The buildings are closed on some days due to events.
- Bamboo grove walk: Do not apply a fixed number of minutes to the whole bamboo grove and temple visit. Separate sites with opening hours from walking sections that can be adjusted.
From Kyoto Station: Identify the rail access first
For visitors starting at Kyoto Station, official information gives a clear rail option: the JR Sagano Line to Saga-Arashiyama Station. This allows the train journey and the walk after arrival to be planned separately, rather than treating all of Arashiyama as a single attraction with only one entrance.
| Planning stage | Confirmed information (checked 2026-10-28) | What to consider separately |
|---|---|---|
| Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama Station | JR Sagano Line; official rapid-train estimate about 11 minutes | This is train time, not the full door-to-door journey |
| Saga-Arashiyama Station to the Togetsukyo Bridge area | Official walking estimate about 8 minutes | Your route and stops along the way determine actual time |
| Togetsukyo Bridge and neighbourhood walk | Can form a walking section of the itinerary | Do not combine all walking, photos and stops into a single fixed time |
| Tenryuji visit | Formal garden reception hours and admission fee | Decide whether to enter the temple buildings before planning the other walks |
The key distinction here is between train time and sightseeing time. 11 minutes is only the official reference for the rapid train; 8 minutes is the estimated walk from the station to the Togetsukyo Bridge area. Adding these figures does not give the total time to reach any temple or point in the bamboo grove, nor does it mean Arashiyama can be completed in a short visit.
If other Kyoto attractions are planned, first identify each day’s starting point and then decide whether Arashiyama should be a separate part of the itinerary. For cross-area connections and ticket comparisons, see the Kyoto city transport guide. This article does not rank transport options by price or speed without equivalent comparable information.
Tenryuji: The garden and temple buildings have different fees
Tenryuji’s visiting information lists the garden and temple buildings separately. Visitors who only want to see the garden and those who also want to enter the buildings should understand the distinction in advance, rather than assume the garden ticket includes all buildings.
| Visit item | Official rules (checked 2026-10-28) | Effect on planning |
|---|---|---|
| Garden | 8:30 to 17:00; final reception 16:50 | Schedule the temple visit within reception hours |
| Garden admission | 500 yen for high-school students and older | Treat this as the garden fee only |
| Temple buildings | Additional 300 yen on top of garden admission | Include both fees if visiting both areas |
| Opening of temple buildings | Closed on certain dates because of events | An open garden does not guarantee that the buildings are also open |
The table separates two decisions: first decide whether to enter the garden, then whether to visit the temple buildings. The second involves an extra fee and restrictions on particular dates. If the buildings are a main purpose of the trip, check Tenryuji’s notices for the day before departure.
Togetsukyo Bridge, the streets and the bamboo grove can be planned as other parts of the itinerary that are not governed by the garden’s final reception time. This does not mean every nearby facility has the same opening rules. No unverified entry times have been assigned to individual facilities.
How to plan: Let the purpose of the visit determine the order
Instead of assuming there is only one direction for an Arashiyama visit, divide activities into those that must follow temple hours and those that can follow your own pace. This is a planning method, not an officially published fixed route.
| Main focus | Decide first | Planning framework |
|---|---|---|
| Tenryuji as the main destination | Garden only, or buildings as well? | Confirm opening and reception hours, then add walking sections |
| Togetsukyo Bridge and the bamboo grove | Which locations do you want to stop at? | Separate arrival by rail from walking and allow flexible stopping time |
| Garden and neighbourhood together | Final temple reception time | Use Tenryuji’s official hours as a boundary for nearby walks |
| Combining with another Kyoto area on the same day | Main transport starting point for the day | Identify the arrival and departure stations for Arashiyama, then check cross-area transport |
For example, if the Tenryuji buildings matter most, first look for notices of closures. If outdoor walking matters more, do not derive the whole itinerary solely from the temple’s reception time. The bamboo path has no uniform official visiting duration, so the schedule should be flexible instead of assigning unchangeable times to every stop.
Arashiyama contains different types of activities, and an order of places on a map is only one way to organise a route. Visitors can start with the rail access at Saga-Arashiyama Station, then adjust the direction based on temple opening, actual walking conditions and what they want to see. There is no need to force the entire area into one time template.
Reminder
Prices, opening hours and reference travel times here come from official sources checked 2026-10-28. Events may close Tenryuji’s buildings, and train times, fees and special visiting arrangements may change. Check the latest official information before departure. For seasonal arrangements, also see the Kyoto autumn foliage page rather than treating one year’s events as permanent.
