Miyagi travel guide: Sendai, Matsushima and hot springs
Explore Sendai, Matsushima and Akiu with official rail and airport connections, temple access restrictions, conflicting Zuiganji admission prices, local food, autumn foliage and Tanabata dates.
Last checked:
Miyagi Prefecture (宮城県) offers three main travel themes. Sendai (仙台) provides rail access and castle-ruin heritage; Matsushima (松島) has temples and historic buildings beside the bay; and Akiu Onsen (秋保温泉) and Akiu Great Falls (秋保大滝) offer hot-spring relaxation and autumn waterfall scenery respectively. Based on official information checked on 2026-10-29, this page covers transport connections, visiting rules, local food and annual events. It also presents differing admission prices from official pages for Zuiganji Temple (瑞巌寺) rather than presenting either number as an undisputed current charge. Fares, schedules and seasonal information may change; check official notices before departure.
Key points
- Sendai as a transport gateway: From Tokyo, the Tohoku Shinkansen (東北新幹線) serves Sendai. Local trains run directly from Sendai Airport Station (仙台空港駅) to Sendai Station (仙台駅).
- History and bay scenery are separate visits: A sightseeing loop bus serves Sendai Castle Ruins (仙台城跡). Godaido (五大堂) and Zuiganji in Matsushima have different access restrictions.
- Two versions of the Zuiganji price: The temple site lists 1,000 yen for adults; an older Miyagi tourism association page lists 700 yen. Check the temple’s updated notice.
- Hot springs and autumn colours: Akiu Onsen provides a relaxation option, while autumn colours at Akiu Great Falls should be assessed using the relevant year’s observations.
Transport gateways
Sendai Station (仙台駅) provides train information for the Tokyo-bound Tohoku Shinkansen (東北新幹線). From Sendai, the Senseki Line (仙石線) also runs toward Matsushimakaigan. From Sendai Airport Station (仙台空港駅), local trains reach Sendai Station without a change; the operator lists a journey time of about 25 minutes.
| Destination or gateway | Verified information | Planning notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo to Sendai | The Tohoku Shinkansen provides access through Sendai Station. | Recheck services and fares for the travel date. |
| Sendai Airport to the city | A direct local train from Sendai Airport Station to Sendai Station takes about 25 minutes. | This is the airport-station-to-station section, not the time to other attractions. |
| Sendai toward Matsushima | The Senseki Line provides rail access toward Matsushimakaigan. | Check attraction walking times and facility hours separately. |
| Sendai Station to Sendai Castle Ruins | From the west exit, take the sightseeing loop bus Loople Sendai to Sendai Castle Ruins stop, about 23 minutes. | This is the bus journey, not the entire walking and travel time. |
Main attractions and experiences
| Name | Features | Official notes (checked 2026-10-29) |
|---|---|---|
| Sendai Castle Ruins (仙台城跡) | Historic and cultural attraction in Sendai. | Take the Sendai sightseeing loop bus (るーぷる仙台) from Sendai Station west exit to Sendai Castle Ruins stop, about 23 minutes. |
| Godaido (五大堂) | Historic architecture and cultural scenery beside Matsushima (松島) Bay. | Admission is free; about 7 minutes on foot from Matsushimakaigan Station (松島海岸駅). Its openwork bridge is unsuitable for wheelchairs and closes in the evening. |
| Zuiganji (瑞巌寺) | Historic Matsushima temple and temple culture. | The temple website lists 1,000 yen for adults; the prefectural tourism association page lists 700 yen (updated 2024-03-31). The two versions conflict. It opens at 8:30 and closes between 15:30 and 17:00, depending on the month; last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Wheelchairs are permitted only in the treasure museum, not the main hall or kuri building. |
| Akiu Onsen (秋保温泉) | Hot springs and relaxation in the Sendai area. | Overnight stays and day bathing depend on each facility; there is no single applicable charge. |
| Akiu Great Falls (秋保大滝) | Waterfall and autumn foliage scenery. | The usual foliage period is late October to early November; the observation on 2026-10-27 was “beginning to change colour.” |
Both Zuiganji admission figures come from official sources, but different versions: the Zuiganji temple visiting guide lists 1,000 yen for adults, whereas the Miyagi tourism association attraction page updated on 2024-03-31 lists 700 yen. Since these pages differ, neither figure is selected here as a universally confirmed charge. Check the latest temple admission notice before visiting.
Accessibility must also be assessed by facility. The openwork bridge to Godaido is unsuitable for wheelchairs, whereas Zuiganji explicitly limits wheelchair access to its treasure museum. These are distinct official restrictions; one attraction’s accessibility information must not be assumed to apply to another.
Local food
| Food | Official description | Theme |
|---|---|---|
| Sendai beef tongue (牛たん) | A representative local food introduced by Sendai’s official tourism information. | City cuisine |
| Zunda mochi (ずんだ餅) | Local rice cakes served with crushed edamame mixed with sugar. | Sweet-food culture |
These are types of dishes and how they are made, not a list of particular restaurants, prices, serving methods or operating days.
Seasons and events
| Month or season | Theme | Official dates and status |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | Sendai Tanabata Festival (仙台七夕まつり), known for its hanging decorations. | 2026 dates: 6 to 8 August. Detailed daily events and ticket information for 2027 have not been announced; do not treat 2026 information as confirmation for the following year. |
| Autumn | Autumn foliage at Akiu Great Falls. | The official general period is late October to early November. On 27 October 2026 leaves were starting to change colour; this is not a fixed annual peak date. |
| Month-dependent | Visiting Zuiganji. | Opens at 8:30 and closes between 15:30 and 17:00 depending on the month. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing; closing time is not uniform year-round. |
What to check before departure
Official starting points include the hot-spring and Matsushima attraction pages of Miyagi Marugoto Tanbo, published by the Miyagi tourism association; the Tanabata feature on Sendai’s official tourism site Sendai Tabibiyori; and the Matsushima Tourism Association’s Godaido page. Verify transport with JR East and Sendai Airport Transit. For Zuiganji’s admission charge and visiting rules, prioritise the temple’s own visiting guide.
Before traveling, recheck the current year’s Tanabata programme, the latest foliage conditions at Akiu Great Falls, the Sendai Castle Ruins loop-bus timetable, Godaido’s evening closure and openwork-bridge restrictions. The conflicting Zuiganji fares deserve particular attention; confirm the applicable fee and permitted wheelchair-access areas directly with the temple.
