Nagano Prefecture () covers a large, mountainous area, with major differences in seasons and transport between regions. Using the six regions in Nagano’s official tourism information, this page outlines travel options and puts seasonal restrictions for alpine areas into one table. The official sources do not list a transport pass valid across the entire prefecture, so none is included here. Return to the Chubu travel guide.

Key points

  • The six official regions are Northern, Central, Eastern, Suwa, Kiso and Southern.
  • Tokyo to Nagano Station: 90 to 100 minutes by Hokuriku Shinkansen; Shinjuku to Matsumoto: 150 minutes on the Azusa limited express () (official overview estimates).
