Which parts of Akita Prefecture () are worth exploring, and which transport connections should you check first when arriving from Tokyo or the airport? Kakunodate () preserves samurai residence streets and castle-town scenery; Lake Tazawa () is known for its lake and mountain views and the Tatsuko statue. Oga () offers Namahage cultural exhibits, while Nyuto Onsenkyo () offers hot-spring experiences. Based on official information checked on 2026-10-29, this guide brings together access points, visiting rules, local food and seasonal events across these areas. Timetables, prices and individual facility operations can change, so check official information again before departure.

Key points

  • Castle town and cherry blossoms: Kakunodate’s samurai residence street offers historic buildings, with weeping cherry blossoms, autumn foliage and snow scenery in different seasons. Some residences can be entered, but no single admission price applies to every facility.
  • Lake scenery and folklore are separate visits: Lake Tazawa has the Tatsuko statue (); Oga’s Namahage Museum introduces local customs. These are not the same sightseeing area.
  • Distinguish overnight stays from day visits to hot springs: Ogama Onsen () in Nyuto Onsenkyo has announced a suspension of overnight accommodation, while the official page still lists day-bathing information. This does not establish the situation across the whole hot-spring area.
  • Check the year for summer festivals: Official dates exist for the 2026 Akita Kanto Festival, but they are not an announced 2027 programme.

Getting there

For travel to Akita from the Tokyo direction, check Akita Shinkansen () services to Akita Station (). Kakunodate Station () is another access point for the Kakunodate area. These are railway entry points; they do not mean that Kakunodate, Lake Tazawa, Oga and the hot springs are connected by walking routes. Check the onward connections for each area separately.

The official access page for Akita Airport () lists an airport bus to the west exit of Akita Station: 1,200 yen one way for adults, half price for children, taking about 40 minutes. It also lists advance-reservation shared transport to Kakunodate, Lake Tazawa and Nyuto Onsenkyo. This is not a scheduled bus that passengers can board at any time after arrival.

Main sights and experiences

Lake Tazawa () Lake scenery and the Tatsuko statue; official information gives a maximum depth of 423.4 metres Lake cruises are seasonal; check departures with the operator for your date
Namahage Museum () and Oga Shinzan Folklore Museum () Exhibits of more than 150 Namahage masks, with opportunities to learn about and watch traditional customs Tourism information lists 8:30 to 17:00 opening hours and about 20 minutes by taxi from Oga Station; check admission fees with the facilities
Ogama Onsen () in Nyuto Onsenkyo An individual hot-spring facility within Nyuto Onsenkyo, with separate information for overnight accommodation and day bathing The tourism page notes that overnight stays were suspended as of 6 January 2026 until further notice; listed day-bathing details are 9:00 to 16:30, 700 yen, to be checked again for your visit

Kakunodate and Lake Tazawa are both possible themes for an Akita trip, but practical planning depends on railway stations and onward connections. The folklore experiences at Oga’s museums and the operating arrangements of individual hot-spring inns should not be combined into one set of hours or prices. In particular, Ogama Onsen’s suspension of accommodation is an announcement for a specific facility, not a statement that other hot-spring inns have stopped accepting guests. Its day-bathing information likewise does not guarantee access on every future day.

Local food

Inaniwa udon () Handmade noodles from the Inaniwa area of Yuzawa City, known for their smooth texture

These represent a hot-pot dish, noodles and agricultural produce respectively; they do not establish individual restaurants’ menus, availability dates or prices.

What to check before departure

The main official information sources include the Akita Prefectural Tourism Federation’s Akita Fan attraction pages for Kakunodate, Lake Tazawa, Oga and Nyuto Onsenkyo, as well as its local-food features. Festival dates should be checked against Akita City Government announcements. For airport transfers, use the latest timetables from Akita Airport and the relevant operators.

Give priority to checking whether Ogama Onsen has resumed overnight accommodation, its day-bathing availability and charges for your date, entry to individual Kakunodate samurai houses, the Lake Tazawa cruise operating dates, and onward transport to Oga. The 2026 Kanto Festival dates identify that year’s arrangements only; for later editions, use new announcements from the organisers.
