You can travel without speaking Japanese. Copy the Japanese phrases below and show them on your phone to shop staff or drivers, or say them using the pronunciation guides. The phrases are kept short and polite. For emergency phone numbers and procedures, see Medical care and emergency assistance.

How to use these phrases

  • To get a staff member’s attention or apologise, say sumimasen (); adding onegaishimasu () makes a request more polite.
  • To ask for something, say “… o kudasai” (); when asking someone to do something, say “… o onegaishimasu” ().
  • Pronunciations are shown in hiragana for reference. If unsure, showing the Japanese text directly is the most reliable option.
