Hakodate () relies on its tram system () for much city sightseeing, but single fares, unlimited same-day rides, consecutive 24-hour use and combined tram-and-selected-bus tickets have different conditions. Based on Hakodate City’s official tourism information (checked 2026-10-28), this article compares the ticket types and Shinkansen connections. See also the Hokkaido travel overview and Hakodate travel guide. Current airport connection times and fares are not included in this numerical comparison.

Key points

  • Tram single fares vary by distance: from 1 December 2025, adult fares are 250 to 300 yen.
  • The tram day pass costs 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for children; the tram 24-hour pass costs 1,130 yen for adults and 570 yen for children.
  • The 24-hour pass is available online only. Its period of validity is different from that of a same-day pass.
  • A combined tram and selected bus day pass costs 1,600 yen for adults and 800 yen for children, allowing comparison across transport modes.
  • Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station () and Hakodate Station () are connected by the Hakodate Liner, with an official journey time of approximately 20 minutes.

Tram ticket coverage and prices

The following prices and rules are taken from Hakodate City’s official pages checked on 2026-10-28. First decide whether you will use only trams or also selected buses, then compare the tickets. Do not treat tickets with different validity conditions as identical products.

Ticket or payment method Adult Child Confirmed use or restriction
Tram single fare 250 to 300 yen — Distance-based fare; these adult prices apply from 2025-12-01
Tram day pass 800 yen 400 yen Tram pass for use on the day
Tram 24-hour pass 1,130 yen 570 yen Valid for 24 hours from first use; available online only
Tram and selected bus day pass 1,600 yen 800 yen Valid on trams and specified bus routes, not necessarily every bus service

A day pass and a 24-hour pass have similar names, but when a trip spans midnight, first distinguish how the valid period is calculated. If you also need bus travel, verify that your route is within the combined ticket’s designated bus coverage rather than buying it solely because its name mentions buses.

From the Shinkansen connection into Hakodate

Travel on the Hokkaido Shinkansen and sightseeing in Hakodate should be planned separately. The Hakodate Liner is the rail connection between Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station and Hakodate Station; trams serve travel around Hakodate itself. They are different forms of transport, not alternative names for the same ticket.

Travel stage Officially confirmed information Planning decision
Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Hakodate Station Hakodate Liner connection, approximately 20 minutes Include this railway leg before planning local transport
Hakodate Station to city attractions Hakodate trams serve city sightseeing Compare single, day or 24-hour tickets according to your needs
From tram routes to bus sections There is a tram and selected bus day pass Identify which bus services are included before buying
Visiting Goryokaku Park Do not treat Goryokaku railway station as the park entrance Check the tram or bus route from Hakodate Station to your destination

Which ticket should you choose?

Travel conditions Ticket to check first What to verify next
Only a few tram journeys Single tram fares Actual fare for each section
Tram use concentrated on one calendar day Tram day pass Planned tram sections and number of trips
Tram use across days Tram 24-hour pass Time of first use and online purchase process
Tram and designated buses on the same day Tram and selected bus day pass Whether the specific bus routes are included

You cannot calculate a universal break-even number of rides simply from the highest or lowest single fare, because fares vary by distance. If visiting Mount Hakodate or other attractions, start with the Hakodate attractions by area guide and identify the destinations before calculating rides. This also helps prevent buying a combined ticket without ever using the designated buses.

Notes

Prices, service times and conditions may change; check official operator information again before departure. In particular, approximately 20 minutes on the Hakodate Liner does not guarantee that a train can be boarded immediately at any time. For longer journeys across Hokkaido, see the Hokkaido transport guide.
