Hakodate () is a major city in southern Hokkaido. Its attractions can be divided into two groups: urban areas including Goryokaku, Motomachi and the bay area, and the outlying Onuma area. Return to the Hokkaido travel guide.

Key points

  • Hakodate’s trams link Hakodate Station, Motomachi, the bay area, Goryokaku and Yunokawa.
  • The “Hakodate Liner” connects the Hokkaido Shinkansen station at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto with Hakodate Station; the official reference is approximately 20 minutes.
  • From Hakodate Station, you can take a limited express to Onumakoen Station, then walk into the park.
  • Goryokaku () and Onuma Quasi-National Park () are in the city and outside it respectively. Do not plan them as one continuous walking itinerary.
