In Hakodate (), start by grouping attractions by area, then check the relevant transport stop names and opening hours. Although Goryokaku Park () and the neighbouring Goryokaku Tower () are close together, they offer different kinds of visit. Based on the attractions’ own sites and Hakodate’s official tourism website (checked 2026-10-28), this article presents confirmed information and warns about the confusing name of Goryokaku Station. For a fuller city itinerary, start with the Hokkaido travel overview and Hakodate travel guide.

Key points

  • Goryokaku Park is a park on the site of a star-shaped fort. The official introduction describes visits throughout the seasons, and a nearby observation tower provides views of the fort’s star shape.
  • Adult admission to the observation deck at Goryokaku Tower costs 1,200 yen.
  • Goryokaku Tower’s own website lists 9:00 to 18:00 every day, with observation tickets sold until 17:50. Hakodate’s official tourism website instead lists 8:00 to 19:00 from 21 April to 20 October and 9:00 to 18:00 from 21 October to 20 April of the following year. The two sets of hours conflict.
  • Goryokaku railway station is not the entrance to Goryokaku Park. Hakodate’s official tourism information advises transferring from Hakodate Station to a tram or bus to reach the park.

What is the difference between Goryokaku Park and Goryokaku Tower?

Information checked 2026-10-28. The “park” and “observation tower” do not share one admission ticket or a single operating schedule.

Location Officially confirmed features Main way to visit
Goryokaku Park A park on the site of a star-shaped fort, with scenery that changes through the seasons Walk through the park and see the area around the historic fort
Goryokaku Tower An observation tower beside the park, providing a view of the fort’s star shape from above Visit the observation deck; check its admission fee and opening hours separately

The two sites are connected by the same star-shaped fort, but looking around the grounds and viewing its shape from the tower provide different perspectives. Even if your plan includes a park walk, decide separately whether to go up the tower; if you intend to do so, check that day’s operating hours.

Goryokaku Tower admission and opening hours

The following is what different official websites published when checked on 2026-10-28. The tower operator and Hakodate tourism website disagree on opening hours. Both versions must be shown; do not assume the information has already been synchronized.

Information Goryokaku Tower’s own website Hakodate’s official tourism website
Adult observation deck admission 1,200 yen This table does not compare the price again
General opening hours Daily 9:00 to 18:00 21 April to 20 October: 8:00 to 19:00
Other seasons The operator’s site still says 9:00 to 18:00 21 October to 20 April of the following year: 9:00 to 18:00
End of observation ticket sales 17:50 —

The most significant difference concerns 21 April to 20 October. The tower operator says it opens at 9:00 and closes at 18:00, whereas the tourism site says 8:00 to 19:00. This is not merely a difference in formatting: it could directly affect whether you can enter in the early morning or evening.

If your itinerary depends on the time you can go up the tower, check the operator’s latest announcement on the day of travel. This article retains both official versions rather than treating either one as the only standard.

Do not confuse Goryokaku Station with Goryokaku Park

Station names in Hakodate can easily lead to the wrong destination. The official tourist transport page points out that Goryokaku railway station is some distance from Goryokaku Park. To reach the park, transfer from Hakodate Station to a tram or bus instead of assuming you can simply walk there after getting off at a similarly named railway station.

Name appearing in transport searches What it means Planning action
Goryokaku railway station Not the same place as the park Do not use it directly as the attraction entrance
Goryokaku Park The star-shaped historic fort park you want to visit Check the tram or bus connection to the park
Goryokaku Tower The observation facility beside the park Check adult admission and opening hours separately

Identify the destination first and then choose the transfer route, rather than relying on search results with matching place names. For tram tickets and connections between Hakodate Station and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, see the Hakodate transport guide.

Where do Motomachi and Mount Hakodate fit in?

Motomachi () and Mount Hakodate () are starting points for exploring other areas of the city. However, the specific prices, hours and station-name caution in this article relate to Goryokaku; they cannot be applied to Motomachi or Mount Hakodate. If your focus is the summit view, see the Mount Hakodate article below. If you want to connect the city with places outside it, check transport and the Onuma itinerary separately.

Notes

The two official sites’ differing opening hours for Goryokaku Tower may affect your visit. Check the tower operator’s latest announcement before departure. The adult ticket price may also change.
