The Goto Islands () lie off Nagasaki Prefecture and can be reached only by plane or boat. Goto City’s official tourism website lists several options with different departure points and travel times. This article summarizes those options and explains how to check reservations and cancellations. The official page does not give airfares or boat fares, so they are not included. For more Nagasaki transport, see Fukuoka to Nagasaki and Kyushu ferries.

Key points

  • Flight: About 30 minutes from Nagasaki Airport or about 40 minutes from Fukuoka Airport to Goto Tsubaki Airport
  • Jetfoil: About 1 hour 25 minutes from Nagasaki Port to Fukue Port; assigned seating and reservations required
  • An overnight ferry (Ferry Taiko) links Hakata Port to Naru Port in about 7 hours 40 minutes
  • Sailings may be canceled due to weather; the final decision is made 1 hour before departure

  • The official site states that times are estimates and vary by service
  • Goto consists of several islands; Naru and Fukue have different ports, so confirm which island you are visiting first

Jetfoils

  • Kyushu Shosen’s booking page states that Nagasaki–Goto jetfoils can be reserved online or by telephone, opening at 9:00 on the same calendar date 2 months before travel
  • The official tourism site states that jetfoils have assigned seats, are faster than ferries, and require reservations
  • Jetfoils carry passengers only, not vehicles

Ferry status

  • Nomo Shosen’s Ferry Taiko is introduced officially as an economical option and is also suitable for travelers bringing a car
  • For Kyushu Shosen ferries serving Nagasaki, Fukue, Naru and Narao, vehicle reservations are by telephone only
  • Important: On Kyushu Shosen’s operations page (updated 2026-10-28), these ferry sections are marked “all sailings suspended from 25 August 2025,” yet departure times for those ferries appear on the same page. The statements conflict, and the notice predates the page update by more than a year. Contact Kyushu Shosen directly before boarding a ferry

Cancellations and same-day status

  • Kyushu Shosen’s official operations page lists Nagasaki–Goto, Nagasaki–Arikawa and Sasebo–Kamigoto services
  • The official site says the final cancellation decision is made 1 hour before departure
  • Information can change suddenly with the weather

Checks before departure

  1. Decide which island you are visiting (Fukue, Naru or Kamigoto)
  2. Book a jetfoil from 9:00, 2 months before travel
  3. Check the operations page on the day of departure
  4. Call to confirm whether the ferry is operating before using it
