Option 1: JR limited express and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen

  1. From Hakata Station, take the limited express Relay Kamome () to Takeo-Onsen Station ()
  2. Transfer on the same platform at Takeo-Onsen to the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen Kamome () for Nagasaki Station ()
  • The Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen opened on 23 September 2022 and runs from Takeo-Onsen to Nagasaki, so there is no direct Shinkansen from Hakata to Nagasaki
  • JR calls this a relay arrangement ()
  • Actual travel times and fares depend on the train and are not listed here; check the official JR Kyushu website

Pass coverage

Pass Can it be used?
All Kyushu Valid on the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen (Takeo-Onsen to Nagasaki)
Northern Kyushu The official train table shows Kamome and Relay Kamome are included
Southern Kyushu Not valid for the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen Kamome or Relay Kamome

For prices and rules for all three types, see Kyushu transport passes.

Option 2: Express bus

  • The official SUNQ Pass route table lists buses from Fukuoka and Fukuoka Airport to Nagasaki
  • The officially listed average travel time is 2 hours 7 minutes (a reference average, not a guaranteed time for any departure)
  • The route is marked reservation required in the official table
  • Departing from Fukuoka Airport avoids first traveling into the city to change transport

Fares and departure times depend on the bus operator and are not included here.

How to choose

  1. With a lot of luggage: Rail requires one same-platform transfer at Takeo-Onsen. The bus route table lists Fukuoka or Fukuoka Airport as origins and Nagasaki as the destination; consult the operator for stops along the way
  2. If you already have a pass: Choose based on the pass type—All Kyushu and Northern Kyushu JR passes for rail, or SUNQ Pass for buses
  3. From Fukuoka Airport: Look up the direct bus route rather than traveling into Hakata first
  4. For scenery or flexibility: Official sources do not compare these factors; compare timetables and fares yourself

Checks before departure

  • Reserve the bus in advance (as indicated in the SUNQ Pass route table)
  • For rail, check train connections and transfer times first
  • If using a pass, verify that your type covers the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen
