| Holding SUNQ Pass | Bus | Routes from Fukuoka and Fukuoka Airport to Kumamoto are listed |
Option 1: Kyushu Shinkansen
- The Hakata–Shin-Yatsushiro section of the Kyushu Shinkansen opened in 2011, and Shin-Yatsushiro–Kagoshima-Chuo in 2004. The entire Hakata–Kumamoto journey is by Shinkansen without transfers
- Passes:
- All Kyushu: Valid across the full Kyushu Shinkansen
- Northern Kyushu: Covers only Hakata to Kumamoto on the Kyushu Shinkansen, so it can be used for Fukuoka to Kumamoto
- Southern Kyushu: Covers only Kumamoto to Kagoshima-Chuo on the Kyushu Shinkansen, so Fukuoka to Kumamoto is outside its coverage
- Travel time and fare depend on the service and are not provided here. Check the official JR Kyushu website
For prices and rules of the three passes, see Kyushu transport pass comparison.
Option 2: Express bus
- The official SUNQ Pass route table lists buses from Fukuoka and Fukuoka Airport to Kumamoto
- Official average journey times: Fukuoka to Kumamoto 2 hours 10 minutes; Fukuoka Airport to Kumamoto 2 hours 5 minutes (officially described as reference averages, not promises for individual departures)
- The table does not mark services from Fukuoka or Fukuoka Airport to Kumamoto as reservation-required. In the reverse direction, only the first early service from Kumamoto to Fukuoka Airport is marked as requiring a reservation
- These routes are covered if you have SUNQ Pass
How to choose
- From Hakata Station: The Shinkansen has no transfer, and bus reservation rules are not a concern
- From Fukuoka Airport: The bus can take you directly to Kumamoto without first going into Hakata
- If you have already bought a pass: Use the Shinkansen with Northern or All Kyushu JR passes; use the bus with SUNQ Pass; Southern Kyushu does not cover Fukuoka to Kumamoto
- This article does not compare the two fares because prices vary by date and ticket type
