A journey around Wakayama Prefecture () does not follow one route. Wakayama City is an urban gateway from Osaka and the airport. Mount Koya centres on temples and wooded approaches. The Kumano Kodo and Nachi Falls are a separate mountain cultural landscape, while Nanki Shirahama is a seaside destination. Based on official information checked on 29 October 2026, this guide covers access to these regions, walking conditions, viewing charges and annual events. The four areas offer different experiences, so the time to Wakayama City must not be treated as the time to Mount Koya, Nachi or Shirarahama Beach.

Key points

  • City transport gateway: Wakayama City () provides official rail information from Osaka, Shin-Osaka and Osaka-Namba, plus JR and bus access from Kansai International Airport.
  • Mount Koya temples: Okunoin () on Mount Koya () features cedar woods, pilgrimage paths and Buddhist history and involves walking.
  • Kumano trails: Daimonzaka () on the Kumano Kodo () has historic stone steps and cedar woods. A particular viewing platform at Nachi Falls charges a separate fee.
  • Shirahama coast: Shirarahama Beach () is known for white sand and coastal scenery, to be considered separately from mountain pilgrimage routes.

Transport gateways

Starting direction / destination Officially listed gateway Important distinction
Osaka to Wakayama City JR routes from Osaka / Shin-Osaka and rail access from Osaka-Namba. These routes lead to Wakayama City; they do not describe a direct journey time to Kumano Kodo or Mount Koya.
Tokyo to Wakayama City Transfer via Shin-Osaka from Tokyo for rail access to Wakayama City. Separate onward connections must be checked for Mount Koya, Kumano and Shirahama.
Kansai International Airport JR and bus routes connect Kansai International Airport () with Wakayama City. Confirm service dates, departures and fares in the operators’ latest information.
Kumano Kodo Daimonzaka Transfer to a bus from Kii-Katsuura Station () toward Daimonzaka. Arriving by bus does not complete the old trail; consider the walking conditions on the stone steps.
Shirarahama Transfer to a bus from Shirahama Station () to the beach. Confirm travel arrangements separately from sea-bathing season dates.

These gateways explain where to arrive first, not a fixed single-day trip across the Kii Peninsula. For journeys with multiple train and bus sections, see How to take buses in Japan and then check the operators’ notices for every leg.

Main attractions and experiences

Name Features Official notes checked 2026-10-29
Mount Koya Okunoin A cedar-lined approach, gravestones and Buddhist temple culture. This is a walking pilgrimage setting; it should not be described as a place seen only from a vehicle.
Kumano Kodo Daimonzaka An old stone-step path and tall cedars forming a traditional pilgrimage landscape. Official information lists bus access from Kii-Katsuura Station. Steps may be slippery; check walking safety in wet conditions and current trail access.
Nachi Falls () Waterfall with a drop of 133 metres. Official admission to the Otaki viewing platform () is 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary students. This is the fee for the specified platform, not an overall admission fee to the entire waterfall.
Seigantoji () Temple culture at Nachisan, one of the cultural destinations in the Kumano area alongside the falls and old trail. Official attraction information is available, but it does not establish the total walking time from the old trail to the temple.
Shirarahama Beach and coastal recreation scenery in Nanki Shirahama (). Accessible by bus from Shirahama Station. Formal 2027 sea-bathing season dates have not been confirmed; do not copy the previous year’s dates.

Mount Koya and Kumano Kodo both have pilgrimage traditions, but their walking conditions differ. Okunoin is associated with a woodland approach, whereas Kumano’s Daimonzaka is a stone-step trail; admission to the Nachi Falls viewing platform is another separate condition. Checking each avoids assuming all the paths, falls and temples around Kumano share opening rules. Shirarahama is a coastal attraction, not a mountain trail.

Local food

  • Wakayama ramen (): Local noodles introduced by the official Wakayama tourism site.
  • Nanko plums () and umeboshi (): Speciality produce and processed food listed by the Wakayama prefectural government.
  • Fresh tuna from Nachi-Katsuura (): A local seafood theme in the Nachi-Katsuura area.
