Mie Prefecture () can be approached through four interests: worship at Ise, coastal views at Futami, Iga culture and the Kumano coastline. Based on official information checked on 29 October 2026, this guide covers rail gateways from Osaka and Nagoya, seasonal visiting hours at Ise Jingu, sunrise views at Meoto Iwa, ninja culture and Ise Festival dates. Ise Jingu is a religious destination; Meoto Iwa is on the coast; Iga is associated with ninja history; and Onigajo is a rocky coastal path in Kumano City. Their transport and visiting arrangements are not interchangeable.

Key points

  • Ise worship: Ise Jingu () comprises the Inner Shrine () and Outer Shrine (), with basic visiting hours that change by month.
  • Coastal sunrise: At Meoto Iwa () in Futamiura (), the sunrise can be seen between the two rocks from about May to July, depending on weather.
  • Iga culture: The Iga-ryu Ninja Museum () in Iga () covers ninja history and experiences; check operating hours and demonstrations for each day.
  • Kumano coastline: Onigajo () features wave-eroded rock walls and coastal paths; conditions on the ground affect access.

Transport gateways

Starting direction Officially confirmed transport direction Scope and notes
Osaka and Kyoto Mie’s official tourism information lists Kintetsu rail access to Iseshi Station (). This concerns entry to the Ise-Shima area and is not a complete direct journey to Iga or Onigajo.
Tokyo and Nagoya From Tokyo, travel toward Nagoya Station () first, then transfer to JR rapid trains or Kintetsu for Ise-Shima. The connection via Nagoya is confirmed; check date-specific fares and trains separately.
Ise Jingu visit Ise Jingu provides separate access information for the Outer and Inner Shrines. These are different visiting gateways; check travel details for the intended destination.
Iga and Kumano The museum in Iga and Onigajo in Kumano City are in different areas. No complete same-day connection among the attractions was verified; do not apply Iseshi connection information to them.

To work out connections between areas, first establish the departure station, arrival station and transport mode. See How to take trains in Japan for information on JR and Kintetsu, then consult each operator’s timetable for the day.

Main attractions and experiences

Ise Jingu Religious and cultural visits to the Inner and Outer Shrines. January–April and September: 5:00 to 18:00; May–August: 5:00 to 19:00; October–December: 5:00 to 17:00. New Year arrangements may differ; follow the shrine’s announcements.
Meoto Iwa Two sea rocks near Futami Okitama Shrine (). Mie’s official tourism page describes sunrise between the rocks from about May to July, but actual sunrise visibility and weather are not guaranteed.
Onigajo Rock walls and paths along the coastline of Kumano City (). Consider weather and path conditions; follow management notices on temporary closures.
Iga-ryu Ninja Museum Ninja materials, historical and cultural displays, and experiences. Operating hours differ between weekdays and holidays; show and special-event schedules depend on daily announcements. This page omits an adult ticket price that could not be directly verified.

Ise Jingu’s hours are basic shrine visiting hours, not the operating hours of nearby shops. Exceptions apply at New Year and during rituals, and onward transport from Iseshi Station must be checked separately for the Inner or Outer Shrine. The “about May to July” period for Meoto Iwa is a seasonal sunrise description from the official site, not a guarantee of a particular photograph on any given day. Onigajo is a coastal path; do not assume it is open based only on a general attraction description when path conditions or management arrangements change.

Local food

  • Ise udon (): A local Mie noodle dish.
  • Tekone sushi (): A regional sushi dish from Ise-Shima.
  • Matsusaka beef (): A representative beef specialty of Mie.

These are categories of local dishes; individual restaurants’ menus, prices and serving times have not been added to this prefecture overview.
