For independent travel in Ehime Prefecture (愛媛県), the three main areas of interest are Matsuyama’s urban culture, Dogo Onsen, and inter-island cycling around Imabari. This page uses official information checked on 29 October 2026 to cover transport access, admission charges, operating restrictions, local dishes and annual events. Matsuyama Castle (松山城) offers visits to its castle keep. Dogo Onsen Honkan (道後温泉本館) has resumed bathing services following restoration, while Imabari (今治) is associated with cycling along the Shimanami Kaido (しまなみ海道). Tickets, transport and reservations for these three types of experience should be considered separately.
Key points
- Dogo Onsen restoration is complete: The entire Honkan reopened on 11 July 2024 and the restoration works were completed on 20 December of the same year. Do not rely on older information suggesting that works are still underway.
- Bathing plans have separate prices: The first-floor Kami no Yu plan is only one of the Honkan’s bathing options. Its price must not be treated as the charge for all floors or resting rooms.
- Matsuyama Castle has seasonal hours: Opening hours for the keep vary by month. Ropeway and chairlift tickets are separate, and the chairlift stops in rainy weather.
- Cycling around Imabari: Shimanami Kaido is an inter-island cycling route, but rental locations, bicycle availability on the day and a full-route itinerary need separate checks.
Getting there
| Access point | Information officially provided (checked 2026-10-29) | What to check before departure |
|---|---|---|
| Matsuyama Airport to JR station | Limousine bus from Matsuyama Airport (松山空港) to JR Matsuyama Station (松山駅): 1,000 yen for adults paying cash or 980 yen with cashless payment. | The airport page states that these fares apply as of 1 April 2025; check updated prices and actual services. |
| Matsuyama Airport to Dogo Onsen | To Dogo Onsen Station (道後温泉駅): 1,200 yen cash or 1,180 yen cashless for adults. | Walking connection after arrival, transport services and accepted payment method. |
| Imabari cycling access | Imabari City’s official information lists bicycle-rental points near the station and at Itoyama as entry points for Shimanami Kaido. | Bicycle availability, permitted return locations and rates for the day. |
The airport bus fares apply only to the specified sections, not to the total cost of flying from Tokyo or Osaka. If combining Matsuyama sightseeing with cycling in Imabari on one trip, check transport between the two cities independently rather than treating bathing, castle visits and inter-island cycling as one pass-based itinerary.

Local food
Ehime’s sea bream rice (鯛めし) has different regional preparations and should not be described as a single type of dish. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ regional cuisine information helps distinguish Toyo from Nanyo preparations.
| Dish | Region and preparation |
|---|---|
| Cooked sea bream rice | In the Toyo area (東予地方), fish and rice are cooked together before the fish meat is mixed into the rice. |
| Uwajima sea bream rice | In the Nanyo area (南予地方), raw sea bream slices are mixed with rice, soy sauce, egg and seasoning sauce, unlike the cooked version. |
Seasons and events
| Month or season | Theme | Official dates (checked 2026-10-29) |
