Kochi Prefecture () can be explored through three themes: an urban historic castle, the Pacific coast and river scenery. Based on official pages checked on 29 October 2026, this guide covers Kochi Airport and rail gateways, attraction charges, safety rules, local dishes and the summer festival. Kochi Castle () offers historic-building visits; Katsurahama () has coastal views; the Niyodo River () and Shimanto River () are natural attractions in different river basins. Some places have explicit restrictions on approaching the shore, entering the water and visiting in rainy weather; understand these before arranging transport.

Key points

  • City culture: Kochi Castle’s keep and Kaitokukan have specified hours, fees and closure dates; entry is not available around the clock.
  • Coastal safety: Katsurahama has seaside walks and a statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, but Kochi City warns that waves can change dramatically and visitors must not approach the surf.
  • Niyodo Blue scenery: Entering the water, eating, smoking and littering are prohibited at Nikobuchi. Slippery rock surfaces and rising water during rain require caution.
  • Shimanto River low-water bridges: These bridges have no guardrails and may be submerged when the river rises; they are not ordinary protected viewing platforms.

Transport gateways

Gateway Official information (checked 2026-10-29) Check before departure
Kochi Ryoma Airport The bus from Kochi Ryoma Airport () to the Kochi Station () bus terminal takes about 25 minutes; to Harimayabashi (), about 20 minutes. Check the day’s timetable with Tosaden Kotsu; reference journey times are not guaranteed for each service.
Rail gateway from Osaka JR Shikoku’s Limited Express Nanpu () connects Okayama Station () and Kochi Station, providing the latter part of a rail journey from Kansai. Check the Osaka–Okayama connection and total fare and journey time separately for the travel date.

Travel needs differ between city attractions and the river basins. Kochi Station is a starting point for the city, not an arrival point for Nikobuchi on the Niyodo River or the Shimanto River’s various low-water bridges. As the mountain attractions are spread out and there is insufficient confirmed information for combining them on the same day and calculating total costs, this guide does not force multiple river basins into a one-day route.
