Natural attractions in Eastern Hokkaido have different ways of being visited. Kushiro Marsh () is about the wetland environment and observation facilities; Lake Akan () combines lake cruises with walks along the shore; and Shiretoko Five Lakes () requires particular attention to seasonal ground-trail rules. This article compares activities using verified information from the Ministry of the Environment, Hokkaido’s official tourism website and the Shiretoko Five Lakes management site (checked 2026-10-28). For journeys between areas, see the Hokkaido travel overview and Eastern Hokkaido travel guide.

Key points

  • Kushiro Marsh is Japan’s largest wetland and provides habitat for red-crowned cranes and other plants and animals.
  • The Kushiro City Marsh Observatory has indoor exhibits, a rooftop observation area and surrounding boardwalks. Viewing and walking can be planned separately.
  • Lake Akan offers cruises, exhibits about marimo algae and a lakeside Bokke mud-volcano trail.
  • On the ground-level trails at Shiretoko Five Lakes, 10 May to 31 July is brown bear activity season and visitors must join a tour led by a registered guide. This rule is reviewed by year.

Distinguish three types of natural attraction

Official information checked 2026-10-28. The following compares the forms of activities, not distances or rankings.

Area and location Confirmed natural or facility features Main way to visit What to check first
Kushiro Marsh Japan’s largest wetland; habitat for red-crowned cranes and other species View the landscape and learn about its ecology Whether an observatory visit or boardwalk fits your plans
Kushiro City Marsh Observatory () Indoor exhibits, rooftop views and nearby boardwalks Indoor displays, observation or walking Do not treat indoor viewing and boardwalk walking as the same activity
Lake Akan Lake cruises, marimo-related displays and the Bokke shore trail Boat trips and walks along the lake Check seasonal conditions for the activities
Shiretoko Five Lakes Seasonal rules for ground-level trails Nature walks Whether your date falls in a period requiring a registered guide

If you mainly want to see the marsh, start with the indoor exhibits and rooftop views at Kushiro City Marsh Observatory. If walking is part of the trip, consider the surrounding boardwalks. Both are mentioned in the observatory information, but they are different activities; not every visitor needs to follow the same walking route.

Kushiro Marsh: Viewing and boardwalks are different activities

The Ministry of the Environment describes Kushiro Marsh as Japan’s largest wetland and notes that red-crowned cranes and other wildlife inhabit it. These are ecological characteristics of the area, not a guarantee of spotting a particular animal on every visit.

What you want to explore Official information How to distinguish it in the itinerary
Wetland environment Japan’s largest wetland and habitat for red-crowned cranes and other species A destination for learning about the natural environment
Indoor facilities Kushiro City Marsh Observatory has indoor exhibits Learn about the wetland through displays
Landscape views Rooftop observation space at the observatory Primarily viewing, not necessarily a long walk
Outdoor walking Boardwalks around the observatory Plan a boardwalk walk separately from viewing

The facility information here is not presented as a rule shared by every trail in the national park. To compare marsh viewpoints and boardwalk routes in more detail, see Kushiro Marsh viewing and boardwalks.

Lake Akan: Cruises, marimo and lakeside walks

Natural activities around Lake Akan can be divided into on the lake and on shore. The Ministry of the Environment’s itinerary includes a sightseeing boat, exhibits about marimo () and a lakeside walk past the Bokke mud-volcano formations. They do not have to be treated as an inseparable package.

Form of visit Officially listed activity Planning distinction
Activity on the lake Sightseeing cruise Check whether boat services operate in the current season
Viewing exhibits Marimo-related displays Ecological displays separate from the shore trail
Lakeside walking Bokke mud-volcano trail Walk beside the lake and observe mud-volcano terrain

If you want a nature walk, the lakeside at Akan differs from the boardwalks at Kushiro Marsh. If seeing the lake from a boat is also important, account separately for cruise services and seasonal arrangements. Both are natural sights in Eastern Hokkaido, but they are comparable by activity type rather than by assuming their transport times are interchangeable.

Shiretoko Five Lakes: Brown bear season on ground trails

Management rules checked 2026-10-28: the ground-level trails at Shiretoko Five Lakes have access conditions during the annually announced brown bear activity season. The official dates listed are 10 May to 31 July, when visitors must take a trip accompanied by a registered guide. This applies specifically to ground-level trails, not every path or observation facility across Eastern Hokkaido.

Activity Confirmed restriction or feature What to check before departure
Ground-level trails at Shiretoko Five Lakes Brown bear activity season is 10 May to 31 July Whether that year’s dates have changed
Ground-level trail walk in brown bear season Must be led by a registered guide How to participate under current official rules
Kushiro Marsh observation or walks by Lake Akan This page confirms only their respective facilities and activities Do not apply Shiretoko’s trail rules to them

Whether you can join a ground-level trail visit depends first on the date and official access system, not just whether the attraction is open. For other periods, detailed trails and annual announcements, see Shiretoko Five Lakes walking rules.
