When walking at Shiretoko Five Lakes (), first distinguish the elevated boardwalk from the ground-level trails, then check which management period includes your visit date. In particular, during brown bear () activity season, the ground-level trails cannot be used in the usual independent-walking way. This article uses only operating information stated on the official Shiretoko Five Lakes website (checked 2026-10-28) and does not estimate unannounced opening or closing dates. For more destinations, see the Hokkaido travel overview and Eastern Hokkaido travel guide.

Key points

  • Shiretoko Five Lakes distinguishes elevated boardwalks from ground-level trails; check them separately.
  • 10 May to 31 July is brown bear activity season. Ground-level trails are accessible only on tours led by registered guides.
  • From park opening to 9 May and from 1 August to park closing, vegetation protection periods apply, and visitors must complete a required briefing before entering ground-level trails.
  • During vegetation protection periods, the administrative fee for adults aged 12 or over is 450 yen (checked 2026-10-28). This is not an inclusive guided-tour price.
  • Ground-level trails may close if bears appear. Feeding wildlife and leaving litter on trails are prohibited.

Start by separating the two trail types

The official FAQ lists two distinct types: the elevated boardwalk () and ground-level trails (). Rules about registered guides, briefings and vegetation-protection fees apply specifically to the ground-level trails. They should not be presented as common requirements for all paths without identifying the trail type.

Option What official information confirms What to compare
Elevated boardwalk This type of walking route is available at Shiretoko Five Lakes Check whether it is open on the day without assuming ground-trail procedures apply
Ground-level trails Entry requirements vary between brown bear activity and vegetation protection periods Date of visit and whether a guide or briefing is required
Bear sighting Ground-level trails may close Having a ticket or plan does not guarantee entry

Before deciding how much of the area to explore, identify which path you want to use and then check the date. Being within Shiretoko Five Lakes does not mean every trail follows identical visiting procedures.

Ground-level trail rules by date

The following is the official system checked on 2026-10-28. The date boundaries describe management periods, not confirmed opening or closing dates for any particular year.

Management period Dates listed officially Conditions for ground-level trails
Spring vegetation protection Park opening to 9 May Required briefing must be completed
Brown bear activity 10 May to 31 July Tours led by registered guides only
Summer/autumn vegetation protection 1 August to park closing Required briefing must be completed

The key distinction is that entry requirements differ between bear season and vegetation protection periods. Both spring and summer/autumn vegetation protection periods require a briefing. During bear season, entry is limited to tours led by registered guides; simply completing the normal briefing is not enough to walk independently.

In addition, “park opening” and “park closing” mark endpoints in the management system and depend on actual annual arrangements. For the following year’s visit, wait for the park to announce actual accessible dates; the management periods alone do not guarantee that visitors can enter.

Administrative fees, guided tours and closures

Fees and participation requirements must also be kept separate. The official site lists an adult administrative fee for entering ground-level trails during vegetation protection periods, but this charge is not the fee for a registered-guide tour during bear season.

Item Official information (checked 2026-10-28) How to understand it
Vegetation protection administrative fee 450 yen for adults aged 12 or over Applies to ground-level trails in the stated periods
Vegetation protection procedure Briefing is required Paying the fee alone does not replace the briefing
Brown bear activity procedure Tour led by registered guide is required Different from the vegetation protection briefing system
Bear appearances Ground-level trails may close A planned visit does not guarantee entry
Trail management No feeding wildlife or leaving litter Official management rules

When checking prices, distinguish two types of charge: the administrative fee for ground-level trails during a specified period and any fee for joining a guided tour. This article can confirm the adult amount for the former only; it does not treat it as the price of the latter.
