Three days in Okinawa without a rental car: Naha, Shuri, and the south
Plan a flexible three-day trip using Naha's monorail, the 15-minute walk from Shuri Station, and southern Okinawa's route 338 bus, with schedules checked separately.
Last checked:
When visiting Okinawa without renting a car, first distinguish city journeys along the monorail line from southern journeys that require a separate bus timetable check. The following divides central Naha, Shuri, and southern Okinawa into interchangeable trip modules over three days, ordered by transport feasibility. It does not claim that every connection can be made immediately on a fixed schedule. Based on official websites checked on 29 October 2026, departures, fares, and actual transfer times for the travel date must be checked separately. For background, see the Okinawa travel guide.
Key points
- The Okinawa Urban Monorail links stations such as Naha Airport, Kencho-mae, Makishi, and Shuri, forming a transport backbone for central Naha.
- Shurijo Castle Park gives a reference 15-minute walk from Shuri Station to Shureimon Gate.
- For travel towards Sefa Utaki (斎場御嶽), official tourism information lists bus route 338 from Naha Bus Terminal, but departures must be rechecked before travelling.
- This three-day table consists of interchangeable itinerary modules, not an officially guaranteed package itinerary.
- Before adding other southern attractions, check whether further bus transfers are needed; the monorail does not cover the whole of Okinawa’s main island.
Dividing the three days: Monorail first, southern buses separately
| Day module | Theme | Available official transport information | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Naha Airport and the city | The monorail connects Naha Airport, Kencho-mae, Makishi, and other stations | Match stations and departures on the day to your accommodation |
| Day 2 | Around Shurijo Castle | The monorail goes to Shuri Station; about 15 minutes’ walk to Shureimon Gate | Check Shurijo Castle admission and reservation rules for the day in addition to walking |
| Day 3 | Southern Okinawa towards Sefa Utaki | Official information lists the direction of route 338 from Naha Bus Terminal | Check departures, return arrangements, and whether they apply on your visit date |
“Day 1,” “Day 2,” and “Day 3” are an editorial order for easy comparison and can be swapped based on arriving and departing flights. No unverified fixed departures, daily transport totals, or promises about the number of sights possible in a day are used. To help select accommodation, refer back to the transport context in the Okinawa transport guide.
Day 1: Connecting stations in central Naha
The Okinawa Urban Monorail (沖縄都市モノレール) route map includes Naha Airport Station (那覇空港駅), Kencho-mae Station (県庁前駅), and Makishi Station (牧志駅). If city activities are the day’s focus, use these stations as reference points when choosing accommodation, arranging luggage, and grouping sights.
| What to arrange | Station or theme | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Arriving at the airport | Naha Airport Station | Decide when to enter the city based on that day’s flight arrival |
| Central Naha activities | Kencho-mae Station | Choose where to board and alight based on the actual accommodation location |
| Another part of the city | Makishi Station | Group it separately from the earlier activities without assuming a fixed stay length |
This approach first uses the official route map to confirm connections between stations, leaving walking routes to individual destinations for checking on the day. The transport guide can further distinguish the monorail from other modes, but this table does not supply unverified fares or exact transfer minutes.
Day 2: Walking from Shuri Station to Shureimon Gate
Shurijo Castle Park gives an approximately 15-minute walking reference between Shuri Station (首里駅) and Shureimon Gate (守礼門). This figure applies only to that walking section, not the whole day’s itinerary.
| Step | Available basis | Flexibility to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Reach Shuri Station | The monorail route map lists Shuri Station | Check travel time from your departure station separately |
| Walk to Shureimon Gate | Officially estimated walk of about 15 minutes | Walking speeds vary; allow for the walk separately |
| Arrange a Shurijo Castle visit | This page verifies only the walking part of the transport | Check admission and main-hall reservations using the Shurijo Castle visiting guide |
If the city and Shuri are your main interests, the priority for this day is not to add more places but to establish the walking route and admission rules first. Especially where specific-date opening arrangements apply, arriving successfully by transport does not mean every facility is open for entry at any time.
Day 3: Check southern buses independently
Naha Bus Terminal (那覇バスターミナル) is one official information starting point for travel towards Sefa Utaki. Official Okinawa tourism material gives directional information for route 338; check current operations again before departure.
| Southern trip option | What official information currently supports | What is not assumed |
|---|---|---|
| Towards Sefa Utaki | Directional information for route 338 from Naha Bus Terminal | Fixed daily departures, immediate availability, or a total fare |
| Other southern attractions | No verified route 338 connection is given here | Outward travel, return travel, and possible transfers all need checking |
| Adding other southern sights on the same day | Official itinerary resources may serve as thematic references | No guarantee they can all be completed within a fixed time without a car |
For other southern destinations, obtain complete outward and return schedules before deciding whether to include them on the same day. Do not simply stack attractions in different directions into “Day 3.” This retains flexibility without making excessive claims based on unverified connections.
Adjusting this three-day itinerary
| Priority | Adjustment | What to recheck first |
|---|---|---|
| Only use confirmed monorail-line destinations | Focus on the themes for Days 1 and 2 | Monorail stations and departures on the day |
| Include nature and culture in the south | Keep Day 3 separate for buses | Actual route 338 services and return arrangements |
| Make Shurijo Castle the main goal | Choose the visit date before planning transport | Current admission and reservation rules for Shurijo Castle |
| Tight airport arrival or departure times | Swap the module order instead of squeezing in more journeys | Flight times and links with city transport |
A reminder
Bus routes, fares, journey times, and facility rules may change. This plan uses official route and attraction information checked on 29 October 2026. In particular, recheck route 338 departures published by the operator before the travel date. Because consistent segment-by-segment fares and journey times have not been verified, no fixed three-day total transport cost is provided.
