When planning travel between Okinawa’s islands, first distinguish which airport a flight departs from, which port a ferry departs from, and whether another transfer is required after reaching an island. Naha () provides an air gateway to several islands; Ishigaki Island () is a ferry gateway for Yaeyama islands such as Taketomi Island (). This article draws on official information checked on 29 October 2026. Reference flight times come from official route information as of June 2025, and the ferry network from an official overview from July 2026. It does not estimate seat availability, ticket prices, or transfer times for a particular future date. Start with the Okinawa islands travel overview.

Key points

  • With Naha as a base, official inter-island flight information lists routes to Ishigaki and Miyako. Check the flights for each destination island separately.
  • With Ishigaki as a base, the official ferry network connects Ishigaki Port with Taketomi and other Yaeyama islands. The official inter-island flight information also includes an Ishigaki–Miyako connection.
  • Ishigaki Airport and Ishigaki Port must be arranged as separate journeys. Even after flying into Ishigaki, the connecting bus and subsequent ferry remain separate things to confirm.
  • Official reference crossing times from Ishigaki to Taketomi differ: the operator says about 15 to 20 minutes, while official tourism information says about 10 minutes. Retain both descriptions.
  • The existence of a route does not mean that there are compatible departures every day. Flights and connections on specified dates must still be checked.
Route Transport Official reference time Information date and scope
Naha Airport to New Ishigaki Airport () Flight About 1 hour Official flight-route overview as of June 2025
Naha Airport to Miyako Airport () Flight About 55 minutes Official flight-route overview as of June 2025
Ishigaki Airport to Miyako Airport Flight About 30 minutes Official flight-route overview as of June 2025
Ishigaki Port to Taketomi Island High-speed boat Anei Kanko about 15 to 20 minutes; official Okinawa tourism information about 10 minutes The two official pages differ; neither guarantees a particular day’s journey

Travel from Naha to Ishigaki or Miyako, and from Ishigaki to Miyako, are air connections listed officially. Ishigaki to Taketomi is a sea connection. Their reference durations cannot simply be added to calculate total travel time, since airport access, ground connections, and waiting for boats are not included in those figures.

The routes and durations in official tourism information help explain how the islands connect; they are not a booking confirmation for a future day. Check the operator’s arrangements for the specified date before travelling.

Choosing an island as a base

Travel goal Where to start Connection listed officially Additional steps to check
Travel from Okinawa’s main island to Ishigaki Naha Airport Official Naha–Ishigaki flight route Actual flights and on-island transport after arrival
Travel from Okinawa’s main island to Miyako Naha Airport Official Naha–Miyako flight route Actual flights and ground transport after arrival
Explore Taketomi from Ishigaki Ishigaki Port Remote Islands Terminal () Official ferry services to Taketomi Sailings on the day, weather, and transfer to the port
Already on Ishigaki, next stop Miyako Ishigaki Airport Official Ishigaki–Miyako flight route Travel from accommodation to airport, actual flight, and onward transport
Use Naha to reach smaller Yaeyama islands First confirm transfer at Ishigaki Ferry routes from Ishigaki Port to several Yaeyama islands “Reaching Ishigaki” does not mean “connecting with a ferry to another island”

Using Naha as an air gateway and Ishigaki as a ferry-transfer gateway for Yaeyama classifies itineraries by the official connections above. It is not a recommendation about accommodation locations or transport costs. After arriving in Miyako, ground transport and inter-island flights still require separate checks. Flight duration alone cannot establish the feasibility of the whole itinerary. For more detail, see Ishigaki Island transport and Miyakojima transport.

Flight and ferry transfers: Times that cannot simply be added

Question to decide What official information answers What this article cannot confirm
Is there a connection? Official air route maps and ferry networks list connected islands Whether the same services and seats exist on your travel date
How do I reach the port from Ishigaki Airport? Flight and ferry information identifies airport and port separately Actual ground transport method and time, and whether the ferry can be caught
How long does Ishigaki–Taketomi take? Operator and tourist information give different reference sailing times Actual sailing and waiting times for a particular departure
How do I get around after reaching Miyako? Air route information confirms a flight connection to Miyako Airport Ground transport and transfers after arrival on the day
What happens if weather affects a ferry? Official tourism information notes that services may change with weather Which departures will be cancelled on the day or whether alternatives are available

Example: Transferring from Ishigaki to Taketomi

First confirm the incoming flight to Ishigaki Airport, then ground transport to Ishigaki Port Remote Islands Terminal, and finally the ferry to Taketomi and its operating status on the day. This is an order of transport stages, not a verified through-connection possible on a particular day. The information here classifies links between airports and ports; it does not verify airport transport or combined ferry connections for any specified travel date. Each must be checked separately. See Ishigaki Airport to the ferry terminal and Ishigaki to Taketomi ferry.

Final checks before departure

For inter-island travel, always check airlines’ and ferry operators’ latest schedules, fares, seat availability, and weather notices for the actual departure date. The reference crossing times and route information in this article have specific version dates. Prices, times, and operating rules may change, so check official websites again before departure.
