Visiting Shurijo Castle: Ticket changes and reservations for the main hall
Compare Shurijo Castle admission before and after the main hall opens, advance-reservation rules, seasonal free and paid area hours, and walking access from Shuri Station.
Last checked:
Planning a visit to Shurijo Castle Park (首里城公園) requires more than checking one ticket price table. Admission prices change in late November 2026, and visiting the interior of Shurijo Castle’s main hall (首里城正殿) will require advance reservations. Based on official pages checked on 29 October 2026, this article separately explains old and new prices, visiting areas, opening hours, and transport. For other parts of Okinawa’s main island, start with the Okinawa travel guide. Prices and opening arrangements may be updated; check official notices again before departure.
Key points
- On or before 21 November 2026, standard individual adult entry to the paid area of Shurijo Castle Park costs 400 yen. From 23 November, it changes to 1,000 yen.
- The main hall’s interior is officially scheduled to open at 12:00 on 23 November 2026. Entry to the interior requires advance reservation.
- The park has free areas and paid areas, with different opening hours. Decide which area you want to visit before planning.
- From April to November, free areas open 8:00 to 19:30 and paid areas 8:30 to 19:00. December to the following March has shorter hours.
- The official walking reference from Shuri Station to Shureimon Gate is about 15 minutes.
Old and new fares and main hall reservations: Check the visiting date first
The following are individual adult admission prices published officially as checked on 29 October 2026, not group fares or other age categories.
| Admission date | Individual adult admission to paid area | Main hall interior visit | What to note |
|---|---|---|---|
| On or before 21 November 2026 | 400 yen | This page does not list interior-opening arrangements for this period | Do not apply the new price in advance |
| From 23 November 2026 | 1,000 yen | Officially scheduled to open; advance reservation required | A paid-area ticket and an interior reservation are different checks |
These prices apply only to their listed dates. For dates not shown, check the official notice applying on the day. The main hall opening also has a specified 12:00 start time, which does not mean the entire park only opens at noon on ordinary days.
| What you want to do | What to confirm first | Relationship to the ticket |
|---|---|---|
| Visit only the free areas | Opening hours of the free area that day | This is not admission to paid areas |
| Enter paid areas | Ticket price applicable to the visit date | Old and new adult fares must be calculated separately |
| Visit the main hall interior from 23 November 2026 | Advance reservation and entry arrangements | Buying paid-area admission alone does not prove that direct entry to the main hall interior is available |
The difference between visiting only free areas and entering the main hall interior is particularly important in planning Shurijo. The former mainly involves the park’s opening hours; the latter also involves reservation requirements in addition to tickets. Visitors travelling with people on different ticket types should calculate each against the current official fare table rather than treating the adult price as the entire group’s cost.
Seasonal opening hours: Free and paid areas separately
| Area | April to November | December to the following March |
|---|---|---|
| Free areas within the castle grounds | 8:00 to 19:30 | Officially listed as shorter hours; check for your visiting date |
| Paid areas within the castle grounds | 8:30 to 19:00 | Officially listed as shorter hours; check for your visiting date |
These hours describe normal arrangements for the park’s two types of areas. Interior visits to the main hall require reservations and depend on the date and official information chosen at booking. Even after checking when a free area closes, you cannot infer the visiting hours for paid areas or the interior of the main hall.
If your travel dates fall around the opening date, first identify which date’s ticket rules apply, then confirm the areas you want to enter. In particular, do not treat paid areas and the main hall interior as having identical admission rules simply because they are within the same park.
Reaching Shureimon Gate: Start from Shuri Station
Shuri Station (首里駅) is a possible transport starting point for visiting Shurijo. Official information provides a reference walking time from the station to Shureimon Gate (守礼門).
| Journey stage | Confirmed information | Use in planning |
|---|---|---|
| Arrive at Shuri Station | Begin the walking section at Shuri Station | Check services that day using the Okinawa transport guide |
| Walk to Shureimon Gate | About 15 minutes | Allow time for walking and admission checks separately |
| Enter the park | Free and paid areas have different hours | Do not use free-area hours to estimate the entire paid visit |
| Visit the main hall interior | Advance reservation required from 23 November 2026 | Reservation arrangements take priority over last-minute changes on the day |
This walking time is an official reference for one segment, not the total time from a hotel to the end of the visit. Visitors also walk at different speeds. If using the monorail, read the Okinawa monorail ticket comparison before planning onward travel around Shuri.
