Travel from Fukuoka to Kagoshima is a long north-south journey across Kyushu. The Kyushu Shinkansen runs directly from Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo, while highway buses also depart from Fukuoka. The main consideration is the coverage of travel passes: not every pass covers the entire journey. This article summarizes official information. Check official websites for fares and services on your travel date. For a rail overview, see Kyushu Shinkansen and limited express trains.

Option 1: Kyushu Shinkansen

  • The Kyushu Shinkansen opened between Shin-Yatsushiro and Kagoshima-Chuo in 2004 and between Hakata and Shin-Yatsushiro in 2011. The complete line now connects Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo without a transfer.
  • Pass coverage for the full journey:
    • All Kyushu: covers the Kyushu Shinkansen between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo, the only type explicitly listed by the operator as covering this full section
    • Northern Kyushu: covers the Shinkansen only between Hakata and Kumamoto; a separate ticket is needed beyond Kumamoto
    • Southern Kyushu: covers the Shinkansen only between Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo; a separate ticket is needed between Hakata and Kumamoto
  • Journey times and fares depend on the train; this article does not list them. Check the official JR Kyushu website.

For pass prices and rules, see the Kyushu transport pass comparison. For detailed comparison of the Fukuoka–Kumamoto section, see Transport from Fukuoka to Kumamoto.

Option 2: Highway bus

  • The official SUNQ Pass route list includes buses from Fukuoka to Kagoshima, including services towards Kagoshima Airport and major ports.
  • Official average journey time: about 4 hours 15 minutes (the operator says this is an average reference, not a guarantee for individual departures).
  • The route is marked reservation required on the official route list.
  • SUNQ Pass cannot be used on overnight highway buses between Fukuoka and Kagoshima.

Fares and timetables vary by bus operator and are not listed here.

How to choose

  1. If time is the priority: choose the Shinkansen; an All Kyushu pass is needed for full pass coverage.
  2. If you already have a Northern or Southern Kyushu pass: part of this journey will fall outside its coverage, so calculate whether additional tickets are necessary.
  3. If using a SUNQ Pass: choose daytime services only, and book in advance.
  4. This article does not compare the fares of the two options because they vary by date and ticket type.
