Toyama Prefecture () has mountain transport, gorge trains, coastal scenery and traditional villages. Before departure, the first questions are which routes operate on your travel dates and where restrictions remain. This page is based on official information checked on 29 October 2026. The Tateyama Kurobe route operates seasonally; although Kurobe Gorge Railway has announced the restoration of services, work still affects access beyond Keyakidaira; Amaharashi Coast and Gokayama offer different types of landscape and cultural visits.

Key points

  • Mountain transport: The announced 2026 operating season for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route () was 15 April to 30 November; do not copy those dates to the following year.
  • Gorge train: Kurobe Gorge Railway () announced restored service to Keyakidaira from 1 October 2026, although access to areas outside the station remains restricted.
  • Coastal views: Amaharashi Coast () is accessible on foot from the station; views depend on weather.
  • Traditional village: The Suganuma gassho-style settlement in Gokayama () has seasonal opening hours and a parking conservation contribution, not a general adult entry ticket.

Transport gateways

Gateway or transport section Officially confirmed connections Notes
From Osaka Connect through Tsuruga Station () to the Hokuriku Shinkansen toward Toyama. This is a transfer gateway, not a fixed Osaka-to-attraction journey time or through fare.
Tateyama Kurobe Different transport modes connect sections of the mountain route, which operates seasonally. First check operating dates for the travel year, current operation by section, and booking and ticket rules before arranging connections.
Kurobe Gorge Take the gorge train from Unazuki () toward Keyakidaira. Full-line and partial-line operations occurred in different months of 2026. Resumed service does not mean unrestricted access to all attractions beyond Keyakidaira Station.
Amaharashi Coast Walk from Amaharashi Station () to the shore. Views over the bay and Tateyama mountains depend on the weather; the same distant scenery is not guaranteed every day.
Suganuma The official tourism page lists access via the World Heritage Bus, alighting at Suganuma. Check bus schedules and onward walking for the travel date; do not simply add travel times from other regions.

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and Kurobe Gorge Railway have similar names but are different mountain transport systems with separate operating information. For inter-prefectural or multi-train travel, see How to take the Shinkansen and then check each service. Do not assume a mountain road or rail route is passable from a single prefectural sightseeing map.

Main attractions and experiences

Attraction Features Official conditions checked 2026-10-29
Tateyama Kurobe Mountain transport linking high-altitude landscapes with pronounced seasonal changes. Operating 15 April to 30 November 2026; no confirmed 2027 opening date or full-route fare was available.
Kurobe Gorge train Railway journey through a valley and scenery along the tracks. Full-line service to Keyakidaira Station () announced from 1 October 2026. For October–November 2026, the one-way adult Unazuki–Keyakidaira fare was 2,480 yen. Construction restrictions remain outside Keyakidaira Station.
Amaharashi Coast Toyama Bay and the Tateyama mountain range provide natural scenery. Walkable from Amaharashi Station; long-distance visibility depends on weather.
Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village () Traditional gassho-style buildings preserved in Nanto City; the city records 9 buildings. April–November: 8:00 to 17:00; December–March: 9:00 to 17:00. Officials advise avoiding visits after sunset.

For ordinary cars at Suganuma, the official parking conservation contribution has been 1,000 yen since October 2025. This is a parking-related contribution, not an admission ticket for an adult entering the village on foot. For Kurobe Gorge Railway, the operator’s July 2026 booking notice said services toward Keyakidaira used telephone reservations, while the website’s sales message at the time of checking indicated online reservations were already possible. Therefore neither channel should be presented as universally applicable across all dates and sections. During some periods only return services on specified sections operate; consult the date-specific fare tables and booking interface. Recheck the latest restrictions for before departure.

Local food

  • Shiroebi white shrimp (): Representative seafood from Toyama Bay, described as part of Toyama’s food culture by official tourism information.
  • Masuzushi (): Part of local sushi culture, alongside the wider Toyama sushi traditions described by tourism officials.

These are ingredients and kinds of food; no individual restaurant menus, prices or serving dates are listed.

What to check before departure

Consult Toyama City Tourism Association’s Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route page for its mountain operating season. Use Kurobe Gorge Railway’s reopening notice, section-based fares and booking information to confirm access to Keyakidaira and restrictions outside the station. Check the Toyama tourism site, Toyama Kanko Navi, for coastal and festival information, and the official Gokayama tourism site and Nanto City for Suganuma Village.

Before booking, compare the relevant year, route section and ticket type. Full-line railway reopening does not imply unrestricted sightseeing. This information was checked on 29 October 2026; fares, operating sections and construction conditions can change, so consult official notices before departure.
