Which parts of Shimane Prefecture () are worth exploring separately? Based on official information checked on 29 October 2026, this guide covers transport gateways, visiting conditions and seasonal events for Izumo Taisha, Matsue Castle and Lake Shinji, and Iwami Ginzan. Izumo Taisha represents shrine culture, Matsue offers a castle and lakeside sunsets, and Iwami Ginzan is a former mining area that requires walking. Choose an area based on transport arrival points, visiting hours and suitability for longer walks rather than treating the sites as one location.

Transport gateways

Direction Confirmed transport gateway Planning points
Osaka / Tokyo via Okayama From Okayama Station (), Limited Express Yakumo () travels toward Matsue Station () and Izumoshi Station (). JR’s 27 October 2026 timetable confirms this section. Check full connections and total fares to Okayama separately.
Izumo Airport Izumo Enmusubi Airport () has connecting buses toward Izumoshi Station, Matsue Station and Izumo Taisha. Recheck schedules and fares for each destination on the chosen travel date.
Iwami Ginzan Iwami Ginzan () in Oda City () is mainly visited on foot around Omori. It is not an extension of Matsue Castle nearby; plan access and walking distances independently.

For shrine worship, check connections from Izumoshi Station or the airport to Izumo Taisha. For the castle and lakeside scenery, check the entry point to central Matsue. The mining area involves a longer walk, and bad weather may disrupt local transport. See Trains and railways in Japan for limited express trains and transfers; no unverified end-to-end fare is estimated here.

Visiting these three areas involves different arrangements

Izumo Taisha requires attention to worship hours and festival arrangements. Festival dates alone do not determine whether every shrine activity is available. At Matsue Castle, distinguish the Honmaru grounds from visiting the keep; the table above gives the keep’s prices and seasonal hours. Iwami Ginzan is different: Oda City’s tourism site emphasises walking. It is 2.3 km one way from Iwami Ginzan Park to the mine tunnel, and visitors are advised to allow half a day. Do not substitute transport times around central Matsue for this walk.

Local food

  • Izumo soba (): A Shimane regional dish recorded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and a way to explore Izumo’s food culture.
  • Lake Shinji shijimi clams (): A representative local lake product, linked with the lakeside area.

Only dishes and ingredients are introduced, without individual shops’ menus or unverified prices.
