A visit to Matsumoto Castle () involves more than admission fees and opening hours. If you intend to enter the wooden keep, consider its narrow, steep stairs and the location of the entrance to Honmaru Garden. Being near the castle does not mean you can enter from any direction, and visiting conditions are not identical in every part of the grounds.

This article uses official information from the Matsumoto Castle administration and Nagano Prefecture (checked 2026-10-28) for admission, regular opening hours, entrance directions and precautions for climbing the keep. Unconfirmed extended hours on special holidays are not included. For other areas, see the Nagano travel guide.

Key points

  • Standard admission is 700 yen for adults and 300 yen for elementary and junior high school students.
  • Regular opening hours are 8:30 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Hours may differ during specified periods.
  • The castle is normally closed from 29 to 31 December. Check separately for special event dates.
  • Enter Honmaru Garden () through Kuromon Gate (); the direction of Uzumibashi Bridge () is not the regular entrance.
  • The main way up and down inside the wooden keep is by stairs, some narrow and steep. Consider climbing separately from admission timing.

Admission, opening hours and entrance directions

Matsumoto Castle’s standard admission information is a starting point, but regular hours cannot replace notices for every special period.

Regular visiting rules (checked 2026-10-28)

Item Officially confirmed information Distinction to make when planning
Adult admission 700 yen General adult admission fee, excluding unconfirmed transport expenditure
Elementary and junior high school students 300 yen Different from the adult fare
Regular opening hours 8:30 to 17:00 May change for specified periods
Last admission 16:30 Not the closing time
Normal closure 29 to 31 December Check for special events separately
Honmaru Garden entrance Kuromon Gate Do not treat the Uzumibashi direction as the usual entrance

It is easy to confuse the closing time and last admission. Matsumoto Castle normally closes at 17:00, but admission stops at 16:30. Arriving based only on closing time could mean being unable to enter.

Official information also says that special periods may use different opening arrangements. The official pages do not list extended hours for the 2027 holiday periods, so past event hours cannot be treated as a new fixed schedule.

What to check before climbing the keep

Matsumoto Castle has a wooden keep where visitors mainly move up and down by stairs. The official information specifically warns that stairs are narrow and steep, unlike walking in a level garden.

Visiting options compared (checked 2026-10-28)

Intended activity Confirmed on-site conditions Planning point
Enter Honmaru Garden Enter from the Kuromon Gate direction Identify the correct entrance first
Climb the keep Mainly stairs for ascending and descending Consider whether you can manage narrow, steep steps
Visit during regular hours Normal hours and last admission restrictions apply Check again on special dates
Visit at year-end Normally closed from 29 to 31 December Do not list these as regular visiting days

If someone in your group finds stairs difficult, consider the official warnings about the keep rather than assuming that all parts of Matsumoto Castle have the same physical requirements. The official pages do not give an alternative accessible route to the top, so this article cannot guarantee another way up.

Conversely, visitors mainly interested in the castle exterior and the garden entrance do not need to treat climbing the keep as an activity everyone must undertake. Admission to the grounds and ascent of the keep can be planned separately.

Official FAQ: Restrictions inside the keep

Information from the Matsumoto Castle administration’s official FAQ (checked 2026-10-28):

Pushchairs Can be left at the administration office or entrance to the keep

Crowds Entry may be restricted around Golden Week and Obon, with long waits before entering the keep
Toilets None inside the keep; 1 accessible toilet in Honmaru Garden and 2 in Matsumoto Castle Park
Baggage Coin lockers within Honmaru Garden; large luggage can be left at the shop; valuables and fragile items cannot be stored
Other Drone photography and flying prohibited; roughly 8 minutes on foot from the municipal parking areas to the Kuromon ticket office

How to arrange admission and the visiting order

The following is a sequence of checks based on official rules, not a fixed itinerary with unverified timing.

Planning step Check first Why
Choose a date Normal closing days and special events Regular hours alone are insufficient
Decide arrival time Last admission at 16:30 Admission ends before normal closing
Plan entry Location of Kuromon Gate Uzumibashi is not the regular entrance
Decide whether to climb the keep Narrow, steep wooden stairs Visitors differ in their ability to walk and use stairs
Combine other attractions Transport within the prefecture This article does not verify complete times or fares from each station to Matsumoto Castle

Although official sources give the Japanese name of Matsumoto Station (), they do not confirm its precise walking distance or time to the castle. No station-to-castle walking or travel minutes are therefore added here. See the Nagano transport guide for planning transport into the city.

Notes

The entrance and stairs inside the keep are separate planning questions. Confirming the visiting date and ticket does not mean that all companions can comfortably climb. Seeing Uzumibashi Bridge does not mean it is a valid entrance to Honmaru Garden.
