Where to stay in Hyogo: Kobe, Arima and other hot spring areas
Compare central Kobe around Sannomiya with Arima, Kinosaki, Yumura and Awaji Island hot spring accommodation, including day-use bathing options at Gin no Yu.

When choosing accommodation in Hyogo Prefecture (兵庫県), it helps to distinguish between a base for city sightseeing and accommodation focused on a hot spring experience. Central Kobe has Sannomiya as a railway hub, while hot spring areas elsewhere in the prefecture include Arima, Kinosaki, Yumura and Awaji Island. Based on official tourism information from Hyogo Prefecture, Kobe and Arima Onsen (checked 2026-10-28), this page explains how to choose an area without comparing individual hotel prices or rankings. For other places to visit, see the Hyogo travel guide.
Key points
- Kobe Sannomiya (三宮) is a hub where several railway lines meet, making it a starting point for comparing city accommodation locations.
- Hyogo has more than one hot spring area: official information introduces Arima Onsen, Kinosaki Onsen, Yumura Onsen and hot spring areas on Awaji Island.
- Arima Onsen also offers day visits: Arima’s official tourism page lists Gin no Yu as a day-use bathing facility; an overnight stay is not the only way to experience the hot springs.
- Decide on the main purpose first: consider whether each day will focus on city sightseeing and transport, or whether a hot spring area will be central to the trip. The areas should not be compared on names alone.
City or hot spring accommodation: compare your travel purpose first
City and hot spring accommodation areas do not necessarily have to compete with one another. They serve different travel purposes. If the day involves several journeys between areas, first examine the railway hubs you will actually use. If a hot spring experience is the main goal, start with the hot spring area and then check return transport and accommodation conditions.
| Accommodation area | Background supported by official information | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Central Kobe | Several railway lines meet at Sannomiya | Actual hotel location, intended train routes, arrival and departure directions |
| Arima Onsen (有馬温泉) | One of the main hot spring areas introduced by Hyogo’s official tourism information | Whether to stay overnight, return transport and conditions at individual facilities |
| Kinosaki Onsen (城崎温泉) | A hot spring area introduced by Hyogo tourism | How the intended hot spring activities relate to the accommodation location |
| Yumura Onsen (湯村温泉) | A hot spring area introduced by Hyogo tourism | Access, type of accommodation and other destinations on the trip |
| Awaji Island hot spring areas | An area included in Hyogo’s official hot spring tourism information | Actual destinations on the island and onward transport connections |
This table groups areas by travel purpose; it does not rank them by price, convenience or water quality. Even within the same area, different accommodation facilities should not be assumed to have identical transport access, check-in conditions or services.
Staying around Kobe Sannomiya: which transport should you check?
Kobe’s official tourism website notes that several railway lines meet in the Sannomiya area. This helps visitors identify the city’s transport hub and match possible hotel addresses to the stations and routes they will actually use, rather than relying on broad labels such as “Kobe” or “city centre”.
| Travel situation | Decide first | Then check |
|---|---|---|
| Mainly visiting Kobe city attractions | Whether most daily activities are in central Kobe | The route from the accommodation to the actual boarding station |
| Visiting different parts of Hyogo | Whether you need to leave central Kobe each day | Intended railway lines and interchange points that day |
| Visiting a hot spring on the same day | Whether you want a return trip from the city to the hot spring area | Return transport and the facility’s opening information for that day |
| Considering an overnight stay in a hot spring area | Whether you are willing to change accommodation during the trip | Luggage arrangements and transport for arrival and departure |
These questions are a planning checklist. They do not mean that every route from Sannomiya reaches the prefecture’s hot spring areas directly, or guarantee access from any particular hotel.
Arima Onsen: day bathing and overnight stays
The Arima Onsen Tourism Association provides transport information from Hyogo. The same official tourism organisation introduces Gin no Yu (銀の湯) as a day-use bathing facility. Therefore, even for a hot spring-focused trip, first distinguish between using a bath during the day and staying overnight in the hot spring area.
| What you want to do | Type of official information available | Still check for your actual date |
|---|---|---|
| Travel from Kobe to Arima | The tourism association explains transport from Hyogo | Transport that day, transfers and accommodation location |
| Bathe during the day | Gin no Yu is listed as a day-use bathing facility | Opening status, bathing conditions and closures that day |
| Stay overnight in Arima | Hyogo tourism identifies Arima as a hot spring area | Room types, prices and check-in conditions at individual accommodation facilities |
| Compare a day trip with an overnight stay | Transport and accommodation requirements can be listed separately | Actual timings and total costs of each option |
This page is an introduction to accommodation areas. It does not treat a single bath admission fee at Gin no Yu as an accommodation price, or assume every hot spring inn accepts non-resident visitors. If the focus is choosing between the gold and silver baths or planning a day visit, read the dedicated article.
How to choose: separate your itinerary and accommodation decisions into two steps
| Question to ask yourself first | Direction to consider | Related article |
|---|---|---|
| Is the focus on Kobe’s urban neighbourhoods and harbour? | Start by checking Sannomiya transport and accommodation locations in central Kobe | Kobe day trip and harbour walk |
| Is the focus on a daytime hot spring experience in Arima? | Check day bathing and return transport first | Arima Onsen day trip |

If most activities are already planned in Kobe, use transport locations to narrow the accommodation search. If hot springs are the main purpose, work backwards from the selected hot spring area to check transport and accommodation conditions. Both can be included in the same trip, but do not assume travel between all the areas is equally straightforward before confirming transport and check-in arrangements.
A few reminders
Average room prices for the accommodation areas were not consistently established in the official information used for this review, so this page does not provide area averages or price rankings. Bathing and accommodation facilities also have different conditions of use. Check the latest information from accommodation providers and transport operators separately before travelling.
