Sawara () is an old town that prospered through water transport, with historic streets preserved along the Ono River and Katori Kaido. This article uses official Katori City information (checked on 2026-10-28) to describe the historic townscape and tourist information centres. The official pages do not give fares or travel times from Tokyo or current usable sightseeing-boat prices, so these are not included. For trips from Tokyo, see the Tokyo day trips guide.

Key points

  • Sawara prospered through water transport in the Edo period and was associated with the expression “Edo Masari” (surpassing Edo)
  • In December 1996, it became the first district in Kanto to be selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings
  • The streets along the Ono River and Katori Kaido form the core of the historic district
  • The official English transport page was updated in 2016 and should not be treated as current transport information

Historic streetscape

Katori City’s official information:

  • Sawara flourished through water transport, absorbed Edo culture and developed its own culture
  • Many businesses continue in historic buildings, giving rise to the description “a living townscape”
  • The historic streets are along the Ono River and Katori Kaido
