Osaka Castle Park () and the Osaka Castle keep () are two different levels of visit. According to the Osaka tourism bureau and the castle keep’s official pages (checked on 2026-10-28), the park is always open and free to enter, while the keep inside it operates with admission prices and opening and closing times. This article sets out the free park area and the paid facility separately, so you can decide whether you need a ticket, when to enter and what ID to bring. For other sights in the city, see the Osaka travel guide.

Key points

  • Osaka Castle Park is free to enter and always open, but individual facilities inside the park may charge separately.
  • The castle keep costs 1,200 yen for adults; for high school and university students the regular price is 600 yen, and proof is required.
  • Junior high school students and younger can enter the keep for free, but proof is required; this is a different rule from “the park is free to enter”.
  • The keep is normally open 9:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30; it is closed from 28 December to 1 January.

The park and the keep: what is free and what is paid

The table below follows the two official pages checked on 2026-10-28. Seeing “Osaka Castle Park is free” is not enough to conclude that no facility inside needs a ticket.

Item Osaka Castle Park Osaka Castle keep
What you visit The park area The castle keep facility inside the park
Admission Free to enter Priced by the visitor’s status
Opening Always open 9:00 to 18:00
Last entry The park itself has no comparable paid-entry condition 17:30
Closing Always open; individual facilities have their own arrangements Closed from 28 December to 1 January
Planning point Decide whether you just want to walk in the park If you enter the keep, check tickets and proof documents separately

So when an itinerary says “visit Osaka Castle”, you still need to separate staying in the park from entering the keep. The first follows the park’s opening information; the second must take the price and entry times into account. Both can fit into the same day, but the conditions of one cannot stand in for the other.

Keep tickets and ID requirements

The keep’s prices depend on the visitor’s status. The table lists only the regular prices that the facility’s official source confirms on the date checked, and does not mix in other ticket types or unverified discounts.

Status Regular price (checked 2026-10-28) ID requirement
Adult 1,200 yen Follow the normal entry conditions
High school and university students 600 yen Proof must be shown
Junior high school students and younger Free Proof must be shown

For students or children travelling with you, what counts is not only age or school status but also whether you can provide the proof the official source requires. Do not apply “the park is free” and overlook the proof required of some visitors at the keep. A single group may include full-price, student and free entries at the same time, so when you work out the budget, list the number of people and the matching price separately.

Opening, closing and entry

The table separates “you can enter the park” from “you can enter the keep”, so that the whole Osaka Castle area is not treated as having one set of opening hours.

What to check Official information Effect on your plan
Walking in the park Always open Does not mean every facility in the park is open at the same time
Keep opening 9:00 to 18:00 Plan your entry to the keep by the facility’s hours
Keep last entry 17:30 Do not treat the closing time as the last time you can enter
Keep closure 28 December to 1 January During the closure the keep cannot be counted as a paid facility you can visit normally

If you only plan a walk in the park, you can start by confirming the park area; if you want to enter the keep, check the entry conditions in addition. Write the two purposes separately in your itinerary, so that one place name does not lead you to mix up the opening rules.

How to plan

Purpose of your trip First condition to confirm What to do next
Just a walk in the park The park is free to enter and always open Then decide whether you need to enter any other facility
The keep is the main visit Price, opening time and last entry Plan the paid visit separately from the park walk
Travelling with high school or university students The 600 yen price and the proof requirement Check that you have the right documents
Travelling with children in junior high school or younger Eligibility for free entry and the proof requirement Do not read “free” as meaning no identity check
Visiting over the New Year The keep is closed from 28 December to 1 January Handle the park and the keep as separate activities

The different arrangements for the park and for the keep are the most important dividing line when planning a visit to Osaka Castle. If you also want to combine it with city areas such as Namba and Umeda, treat Osaka Castle Park as a separate module and compare the other areas in how to plan 3 days in Osaka.

Reminders

This article follows the official pages checked on 2026-10-28. Prices, opening times and rules may change later; before you go, check the official announcements of Osaka Castle Park and the castle keep again, paying particular attention to ID requirements, last entry time and closing days.
