Nagoya Castle and Atsuta Shrine: Admission, palace access and opening hours
Compare what you can enter at Nagoya Castle, including Honmaru Palace and the closed keep, with Atsuta Shrine worship and its separately ticketed treasure hall.
Last checked:
Nagoya Castle (名古屋城) and Atsuta Shrine (熱田神宮) are both historic attractions in Nagoya, but they have different visiting arrangements. Nagoya Castle requires an admission ticket, and not every building is open to visitors. At Atsuta Shrine, visiting the shrine and entering the Treasure Hall are separate activities with different hours.
This article uses official information checked on 2026-10-28 to compare tickets, accessible areas and time restrictions, helping visitors plan both attractions. Since the official pages do not confirm travel times or transfer routes between the two places, no unverified transport times are provided. For other sights, see the Aichi travel guide.
Key points
- Adult admission to Nagoya Castle is 1,000 yen, effective from 1 October 2026.
- Honmaru Palace at Nagoya Castle is open for visits, with admission from 9:00 to 16:00. Visitors who have paid Nagoya Castle admission do not need another ticket for the palace.
- The Nagoya Castle keep is currently closed to entry, so a visit inside the keep cannot be included in the itinerary.
- Official tourism information says Atsuta Shrine is open for worship 24 hours a day, but the Treasure Hall has separate opening hours and admission charges.
- When planning a visit, distinguish between “shrine worship”, “Treasure Hall visit” and “Nagoya Castle admission” rather than applying the rules of one facility to another.
Nagoya Castle: What can you visit?
The main distinction within Nagoya Castle is between Honmaru Palace (本丸御殿) and the castle keep (天守閣).
Although both belong to Nagoya Castle, their visiting conditions differ. Honmaru Palace has defined entry hours, while the keep is not currently open to the public.
Nagoya Castle visitor information (checked on 2026-10-28)
| Item | Officially confirmed information | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Adult admission | 1,000 yen | Basic admission cost to budget for before entering |
| New price effective | 1 October 2026 | Prices in older travel information may no longer apply |
| Honmaru Palace | Open to visitors | Can be included in a castle visit |
| Honmaru Palace entry hours | 9:00 to 16:00 | Plan around palace entry hours |
| Extra Honmaru Palace fee | No separate charge for visitors who have paid Nagoya Castle admission | No need to count another admission fee for the palace |
| Castle keep | Currently closed to visitors | Do not plan to enter the keep |
| Nagoya Castle opening hours | 9:00 to 16:30, last admission 16:00 (Nagoya City tourism information) | The palace’s 16:00 is the entry time stated on the official page |
| Closed | 29 December to 1 January; may vary because of events | Avoid planning a visit over the year-end/New Year closure |
| Access | About 5 minutes’ walk from exit 7 of Nagoyajo Station on the Meijo Line | The Me~guru Nagoya sightseeing bus also has a Nagoya Castle stop |
The important distinction is that being able to enter Nagoya Castle does not mean being able to enter its keep.
If the main purpose is to enter historic buildings, Honmaru Palace and the keep cannot be treated as equivalent choices. Plan around the facilities that can actually be entered, rather than relying on the attraction name alone.
Honmaru Palace entry hours should also be distinguished from the overall Nagoya Castle visiting rules. Having bought a castle admission ticket does not mean the palace can be entered at any time.
Atsuta Shrine: How do shrine worship and the Treasure Hall differ?
Atsuta Shrine’s opening hours can be easily misunderstood.
The official tourism page lists shrine worship and the Treasure Hall separately. Worship is marked as available around the clock, but the Treasure Hall has designated opening and last-admission times.
Atsuta Shrine opening hours and fees (checked on 2026-10-28)
| Item | Shrine worship | Treasure Hall |
|---|---|---|
| Opening hours | Officially stated as 24 hours | 9:00 to 16:30 |
| Last admission | Not applicable to general worship | 16:10 |
| Adult fee | The official Treasure Hall fee does not apply to shrine worship | 500 yen |
| Main distinction | Worship at the shrine | Entering a facility with set visiting hours |
| Treasure Hall closure days | Not applicable | Last Wednesday of each month and the following day; 25 to 31 December |
| Access | Atsuta Jingu Nishi Station on the Meijo Line; Jingumae Station on Meitetsu | Same as left |
The Treasure Hall’s adult price of 500 yen is an admission fee for the hall only and must not be described as an overall fee for visiting Atsuta Shrine.
Likewise, 24-hour shrine worship does not mean the Treasure Hall can be entered in the evening.
An itinerary involving shrine worship alone has different time restrictions from one including the Treasure Hall. The latter must fit the hall’s opening and last-admission times.
How to plan Nagoya Castle and Atsuta Shrine
The two attractions can be arranged in different ways according to the purpose of the visit. This is not a fixed transport itinerary, but a decision table based on officially confirmed opening rules.
| Main objective | What to check first | Planning principle |
|---|---|---|
| Enter historic buildings at Nagoya Castle | Honmaru Palace entry hours | Visit the palace within the entry window |
| Climb the Nagoya Castle keep | Keep currently closed to entry | Do not include a visit inside the keep |
| Mainly worship at Atsuta Shrine | Shrine worship access arrangements | Treat this separately from the Treasure Hall |
| Worship at the shrine and also visit the Treasure Hall | Treasure Hall last-admission time | Make sure the hall visit fits within its time limits |
| Visit both attractions on the same day | Admission times at both facilities | Schedule indoor visits with cut-off times before other activities |
The key to planning is not simply deciding which attraction to see first, but identifying which facilities have specific entry times.
Both Honmaru Palace and Atsuta Shrine’s Treasure Hall have defined visiting windows, while general shrine worship follows different arrangements. On the same day, give priority to facilities with explicit time restrictions.
This article does not give fixed journey times between the two attractions or recommended departure times because these were not confirmed by the official pages. For journeys from different starting points, use the Aichi transport guide.
Notes
Nagoya Castle’s adult admission changed in October 2026. When referring to older information, check whether the prices have been updated.
Also, “the Nagoya Castle keep is currently closed to entry” and “visiting restrictions at Inuyama Castle” are rules for different attractions and must not be confused. For another historic castle in Aichi, see the Inuyama Castle and castle town guide.
Prices, opening hours and visiting rules here are based on official information checked on 2026-10-28. These may change; consult official websites before departure.
