When sightseeing from Kyoto Station (), the same transport option does not suit Kiyomizudera (), Kinkakuji (), Arashiyama () and Fushimi Inari Taisha () equally. Official information recommends different combinations of train, walking and bus for these directions. Based on shrine and temple websites and Kyoto City tourism information (checked 2026-10-28), this article sets out the routes, stops and precautions to identify first. Use it with the Kyoto travel guide and Kyoto transport overview. No ranking of “fastest routes” in minutes is given without comparable conditions at the same times.

Key points

  • Towards Kiyomizudera: Official Kyoto tourism guidance recommends combining trains with walking or a bus transfer. On holidays, EX100/EX101 sightseeing express buses offer access to Gojozaka.
  • Towards Arashiyama: Take the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama Station.
  • Towards Fushimi Inari: Take the JR Nara Line to Inari Station; the shrine is a short walk from the station.
  • Towards Kinkakuji: The temple’s official access page identifies Kinkakuji-michi as a Kyoto City Bus stop for arrival.

From Kyoto Station: Four destinations at a glance

Only connections confirmed in the research sources are listed. The “route type” column is not a complete timetable for every segment, nor does it mean every mode is covered by one ticket (checked 2026-10-28).

Destination Confirmed transport option Station or bus stop to identify Key planning point
Kiyomizudera Train plus walking, or train and bus; sightseeing express bus option on holidays Gojozaka () Do not treat road conditions for ordinary buses as fixed
Arashiyama JR Sagano Line () from Kyoto Station Saga-Arashiyama Station () First identify the correct railway station name
Fushimi Inari Taisha JR Nara Line () Inari Station () Official directions say it is a short walk from the station
Kinkakuji City bus to the temple area Kinkakuji-michi () Confirm an actual service to this alighting stop

The table converts each “destination” into a “stop name to search for”. Arashiyama, for example, is an area, while the official rail destination is Saga-Arashiyama. Fushimi Inari instructions specify JR Inari Station. Searching only for a broad area name without confirming the station makes it harder to check connections and walking arrangements.

Kiyomizudera: Transport choices when roads are congested

Official Kyoto tourism guidance recommends taking a train first, then walking or changing to a bus towards Kiyomizudera in Higashiyama. One reason is that some direct road routes may be affected by congestion. This does not claim that trains will always be faster on every date; it cautions against treating city bus journey times as fixed.

Transport situation Official information What to check
Approach Higashiyama by train Train travel can be followed by walking or a connecting bus Where to start walking and whether a transfer is needed
Sightseeing express bus on holidays EX100/EX101 can serve Gojozaka Whether they run that day, actual departures and where to wait
Mainly using buses to reach the Kiyomizudera area Roads may be congested Do not treat the estimated arrival time as guaranteed

Gojozaka is an important bus stop name in the transport instructions. Getting off there does not mean that all walking to Kiyomizudera has been completed. Where companions have special walking needs, treat the transport stop and the actual attraction entrance as two separate checks. This article gives no unverified walking minutes and does not rank EX100/EX101 against other routes using fixed travel times.

Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari: Find the right JR destination first

For visitors starting at Kyoto Station, the official sources offer relatively clear JR station information for these two directions. Keeping them separate reduces confusion between destination station names.

Destination Official direction from Kyoto Station Confirmed detail after arrival
Arashiyama JR Sagano Line to Saga-Arashiyama Station Use Saga-Arashiyama as the rail destination when searching
Fushimi Inari Taisha JR Nara Line to Inari Station The official instructions indicate a short walk from the station

Distinguish “JR route confirmed” from “all city one-day tickets are valid”. This article covers attraction access and does not apply unchecked ticket coverage to JR journeys. If also using Kyoto’s subway or city buses that day, compare the Kyoto bus and subway one-day passes before buying.

For Arashiyama, first establish Saga-Arashiyama as the station, then decide which places to visit locally. For Fushimi Inari, use Inari Station as the central JR search point. This planning method is based on official station names and does not assume unverified transfer costs or walking times to other attractions after arrival.

Kinkakuji: Separate “arrival bus stop” from “route at the starting point”

Kinkakuji’s website gives the Kyoto City Bus alighting stop as Kinkakuji-michi. This confirms the stop for the final part of the trip, but does not establish that departures from Kyoto Station always use the same bus, boarding stop or journey time at every hour.

Confirmed Still needs to be checked for the day
Kinkakuji’s official bus stop is Kinkakuji-michi Specific boarding stop and services from Kyoto Station
Kinkakuji-michi can be used as the final transport search point Transfers, waiting and changes to traffic conditions
Transport can be planned separately from other destinations Actual travel time when combining with Kiyomizudera, Arashiyama or other areas

If visiting another area on the same day, establish the origin and destination of each segment before looking up transfers. Without that, the general label “within Kyoto City” is not enough to produce a reliable uniform journey time for different directions. For the temple visit itself, see the Kinkakuji transport and visiting guide.

How to plan: Confirm transport details for each attraction

Pre-departure question Method Destination
Have you identified the actual alighting stop? Search using official station or bus stop names All four attractions
Is JR your intended main transport? Check actual Sagano or Nara Line services first Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari
Want to avoid routes prone to congestion? Check train connections and holiday sightseeing bus information for Kiyomizudera Kiyomizudera
Need a city bus to reach the temple area? Use Kinkakuji-michi as the final stop and separately check services from Kyoto Station Kinkakuji
Planning several areas in one day? Check each route, ticket and transfer separately instead of simply adding up estimated times for four places All four attractions

When visiting several destinations in one day, identify the transport modes and stops before adjusting attraction order. Official guidance for Kiyomizudera already notes road congestion, and holiday bus services have operating conditions; a general average journey time is not enough. The confirmed information differs across all four directions, so routes should be considered separately.

Reminder

This article uses official transport information checked 2026-10-28. Trains, stops, sightseeing bus operating days, tickets and road conditions may change. Recheck relevant operator, shrine and temple websites before departure. In particular, holiday arrangements for EX100/EX101 do not mean the same service runs every day, and no minimum travel time is guaranteed for every direction at all hours.
