Kansai rail passes: JR WIDE, Mini and Railway Pass Lite
Compare JR Kansai WIDE, Mini and KANSAI RAILWAY PASS LITE prices, coverage and validity dates, while distinguishing recently discontinued rail passes.

If you plan to travel between Osaka (大阪), Kyoto (京都) and Hyogo (兵庫県), do not choose a ticket solely from the general term “Kansai rail pass”. JR and private railway passes cover different routes, and some older tickets are no longer sold. Based on official information from the respective operators (checked 2026-10-28), this article compares current types and discontinued tickets. Because each visitor’s stations and individual fares differ, it does not claim that any particular pass is necessarily the cheapest for a given itinerary. See the Kansai travel guide to plan destinations first.
Key points
- JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass: 5 consecutive days, 12,000 yen for adults and 6,000 yen for children; valid on the Sanyo Shinkansen within a designated section.
- JR Kansai Mini Pass: 3 consecutive days, 3,000 yen for adults and 1,500 yen for children; Shinkansen services are not included, and limited express trains such as HARUKA require separate limited express charges.
- KANSAI RAILWAY PASS LITE: for the autumn-winter 2026 version, adult prices are 5,200 yen for 2 days and 6,500 yen for 3 days. Not all private railways, subways and buses are included.
- Two older passes have stopped being sold: sales of the JR Kansai Area Pass ended on 2026-09-30, while sales of the old KANSAI THRU PASS ended in fiscal 2023.
- Days of validity do not mean full hours counted from any start time: a day on the private railway Lite pass runs from 3:00 to 2:59 the following day.
JR versus private railway passes: compare transport systems first
The table includes only prices and principal restrictions stated on official pages. When travelling between cities, first determine whether each intended station is operated by JR, a private railway or a subway. Transport options within the same city should not be assumed to accept the same pass.
| Pass | Price when checked | Validity | Main coverage and exclusions |
|---|---|---|---|
| JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass (関西ワイドエリアパス) | Adult 12,000 yen; child 6,000 yen | 5 consecutive days | Designated JR routes; the Sanyo Shinkansen (山陽新幹線) between Shin-Osaka and Okayama is included; the Tokaido Shinkansen is excluded |
| JR Kansai Mini Pass (関西ミニパス) | Adult 3,000 yen; child 1,500 yen | 3 consecutive days | Designated JR routes; Shinkansen excluded; HARUKA and other limited express services require a separate limited express fee |
| KANSAI RAILWAY PASS LITE | Adult 5,200 yen for 2 days; 6,500 yen for 3 days | 2 or 3 consecutive days | Designated private railways and subways; JR, Kyoto Municipal Subway, Randen, Keihan Otsu Line and buses are excluded |
Choosing between JR WIDE and Mini
A notable distinction of the JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass is its coverage of the Shin-Osaka to Okayama section of the Sanyo Shinkansen. It cannot be used on the Tokaido Shinkansen towards Tokyo. The wider coverage makes it useful to check whether the itinerary includes longer journeys beyond the Osaka-Kyoto-Kobe urban area, rather than using “five-day pass” alone as a reason to buy.
The JR Mini Pass covers designated JR travel in and around Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe. It is valid for three consecutive days and can be compared against whether most of the journey uses the relevant JR lines. If you plan to use limited express services such as HARUKA, list the additional limited express fee separately; the pass price must not be treated as the total cost of every train.
Private railway Lite: autumn-winter 2026 dates and exceptions
The KANSAI RAILWAY PASS LITE details here apply only to the autumn-winter 2026 version (checked 2026-10-28). Do not treat them as permanent rules for the following year. Along with price, check the sale period, activation deadline, final usage date and beginning and end of each usage day.
| Item | 2-day pass | 3-day pass |
|---|---|---|
| Adult price | 5,200 yen | 6,500 yen |
| Sale period | 2026-10-01 to 2027-03-31 | 2026-10-01 to 2027-03-31 |
| Latest start date | 2027-03-31 | 2027-03-31 |
| Last valid date | 2027-04-01 | 2027-04-02 |
| Conditions after purchase | Within 3 months of purchase and subject to the activation deadline above | Within 3 months of purchase and subject to the activation deadline above |
| Boundary of a usage day | 3:00 to 2:59 the following day | 3:00 to 2:59 the following day |
For example, if a digital ticket is first activated between 0:00 and 2:59, the operator says this still belongs to the previous usage day. At 3:00, it cannot be treated as a new day of continued validity. This is why Lite should not simply be described as a pass valid for a fixed number of hours after activation.
In addition, Lite is not an unlimited pass for every private railway and subway. Kyoto Municipal Subway, Randen (嵐電), Keihan Otsu Line (京阪大津線) and buses are all on the official exclusion list. Even with frequent transfers on the same day, compare each leg with the covered lines and operating companies.
Keep older passes separate from tickets currently sold
Older travel accounts can be confusing because the pass names are similar. Sales of the JR Kansai Area Pass (関西エリアパス) ended on 30 September 2026. The old KANSAI THRU PASS also has an official discontinuation announcement, with sales ending in fiscal 2023.
| Name | Status when checked | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| JR Kansai Area Pass | Discontinued | Do not treat it as available for immediate purchase or budget using old prices |
| Old KANSAI THRU PASS | Discontinued | Distinguish it from KANSAI RAILWAY PASS LITE |
| JR Kansai WIDE / Mini and KANSAI RAILWAY PASS LITE | Corresponding official product details were available when checked | Verify personal eligibility, dates and covered sections |
Names of discontinued tickets may still appear in historical route descriptions. Do not substitute an old ticket name for a new one or infer Lite coverage from an older pass.
How to choose: an itinerary decision table instead of assuming a pass pays off
| Travel need to confirm first | Pass type to check first | What remains to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Itinerary includes the Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Okayama | JR Kansai WIDE | Passenger eligibility, valid sections and actual individual fares |
| Using designated JR routes between Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe | JR Mini | Additional limited express charges and whether consecutive days suit your plans |
| Multiple journeys on covered private railways | KANSAI RAILWAY PASS LITE | Excluded lines, activation day and service schedules |
| Combining JR, subway, private railways and buses on one day | Identify each operator by segment first; one ticket may not suffice | Sections actually covered by passes and additional fares |
| Only old KANSAI THRU PASS or JR Kansai Area Pass information is available | Do not treat these as tickets on sale | Recheck currently available official products |
To decide “which pass saves the most”, you need definite travel dates, departure and arrival stations, routes and fares. This article does not equate a lower pass price with guaranteed savings. For intercity trips, divide the journey by transport operator and then compare validity dates to establish a verifiable budget.
A few reminders
Prices, sale periods and usage conditions here are based on official pages checked 2026-10-28 and may be updated. Check official websites again before departure, especially Lite’s cross-year validity, JR route coverage, passenger eligibility and replacement arrangements for discontinued tickets.
