Itoshima () lies west of Fukuoka City. From Hakata Station (), the Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line runs directly onto the JR Chikuhi Line, reaching Chikuzen-Maebaru Station () without changing trains. The difficult part comes afterward: buses to the Futamigaura area are infrequent, so you need to plan around their timetable. For more Fukuoka transport information, see the Fukuoka travel guide; for activities in Itoshima, see the Itoshima day-trip guide.

Key points

  • Train: Hakata Station to Chikuzen-Maebaru Station, direct without transfers, about 41 to 43 minutes; 640 yen for adults and 320 yen for children
  • Bus: Showa Bus [25] Nokita–Futamigaura Line from the north exit of Chikuzen-Maebaru Station; flat fare of 200 yen throughout (100 yen for children)
  • Very few departures: Under the timetable revised on 4 April 2026, there are 6 buses toward Nishi-no-ura per day on both weekdays and holidays, and 6 return departures
  • The subway day pass does not cover the full trip: It covers only the three subway lines (Airport, Hakozaki, and Nanakuma). Chikuzen-Maebaru is on the JR Chikuhi Line, so a separate fare is needed

Planning a day trip

  • The first bus departs Maebaru Station North Exit at 9:00 on weekdays and 9:05 on holidays, so take a train that arrives at Chikuzen-Maebaru Station before that time
  • The last return bus leaves Nishi-no-ura at 17:26 (the same on weekdays and holidays), reaching Maebaru Station North Exit at about 18:00. If you want to watch the sunset, check that day’s sunset time first. In summer, sunset may be later than the last bus, so another form of transport will be necessary
  • The 6 buses run at intervals of 1 to 1.5 hours. Time at each attraction must fit the departures

Other ways to travel

  • The Itoshima Tourism Association’s transport page describes Chikuzen-Maebaru Station as a starting point for bicycle rental and buses
  • Driving or renting a car allows you to reach places that buses do not serve. See the forthcoming pages about driving for license requirements and rules
