JR Hokkaido rail passes: Island-wide, Noboribetsu and Furano
Compare advance-purchase adult fares, consecutive validity periods, passport eligibility and excluded transport for the Hokkaido Rail Pass and two Sapporo-area passes.
Last checked:
When planning independent travel in Hokkaido (北海道), comparing JR Hokkaido’s island-wide rail pass with its Sapporo-area passes involves more than the purchase price: travel coverage, consecutive days of validity and passport eligibility also matter. This article summarises advance-purchase adult prices and stated restrictions for three types of passes from JR Hokkaido’s official ticket page (checked 2026-10-28). For cross-region planning, see the Hokkaido travel overview and Hokkaido transport basics.
Key points
- The Hokkaido Rail Pass offers 5, 7 or 10 consecutive days, with adult advance-purchase prices of 22,000, 28,000 and 37,000 yen, respectively.
- The Sapporo-Noboribetsu Area Pass is valid for 4 consecutive days, with an advance-purchase adult price of 10,000 yen.
- The Sapporo-Furano Area Pass is also valid for 4 consecutive days, with an advance-purchase adult price of 11,000 yen.
- JR Hokkaido lists eligibility for holders of non-Japanese passports. These passes do not include the Hokkaido Shinkansen, Sapporo subway or Sapporo tram.
Three passes compared
Prices checked 2026-10-28. All prices below are advance-purchase adult prices, not station-purchase prices.
| Pass | Consecutive days | Adult advance-purchase price | Travel direction to check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hokkaido Rail Pass | 5 days | 22,000 yen | Trips covering more areas of Hokkaido |
| Hokkaido Rail Pass | 7 days | 28,000 yen | Island-wide option for a longer trip |
| Hokkaido Rail Pass | 10 days | 37,000 yen | Island-wide option for an even longer consecutive period |
| Sapporo-Noboribetsu Area Pass | 4 days | 10,000 yen | Trips primarily towards Sapporo and Noboribetsu (登別) |
| Sapporo-Furano Area Pass | 4 days | 11,000 yen | Trips primarily towards Sapporo and Furano (富良野) |
These are advance-purchase adult prices for the passes themselves, not full trip costs. They do not mean using a pass will always be cheaper. As the passes cover different consecutive periods, total prices alone are not a valid ranking.
Eligibility and transport restrictions
Before purchasing, check holder eligibility and covered trains or transport separately. Meeting the eligibility rule does not mean every intended service is included.
| Item to check | What JR Hokkaido states | Meaning for your itinerary |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Holder of a non-Japanese passport | Confirm eligibility using passport status before planning around a pass |
| Hokkaido Shinkansen | Not covered | Do not count Shinkansen segments as travel included in the pass |
| Sapporo subway | Not covered | Plan subway travel within Sapporo separately |
| Sapporo tram | Not covered | Tram travel is not included in a JR pass |
| Validity period | Area passes: 4 days; island-wide pass: 5, 7 or 10 days, all consecutive | These are not non-consecutive days that can be selected individually |
If your trip includes city sightseeing, subway and tram travel may require tickets in addition to a JR pass. The Sapporo transport guide and Sapporo day pass comparison can be read alongside this table.
How to choose: Area first, then consecutive days
| Planning question | Pass to consider first | What to compare next |
|---|---|---|
| Mainly travelling between Sapporo and Noboribetsu | Sapporo-Noboribetsu Area Pass | Whether the journey fits within 4 consecutive days and the routes are covered |
| Mainly travelling between Sapporo and Furano | Sapporo-Furano Area Pass | Whether the journey fits within 4 consecutive days and the routes are covered |
| Travelling across several Hokkaido regions | Hokkaido Rail Pass | Whether 5, 7 or 10 days matches actual train dates |
| Using subway or tram in Sapporo | Do not count this as JR pass travel | Check separate Sapporo transport tickets |
| Taking the Hokkaido Shinkansen | Do not count the segment under any of these three passes | Check the Shinkansen ticket separately |
This is not a ranking of which pass is inevitably better value. The names and travel directions help narrow the options, but you must check official route coverage segment by segment and compare against the cost of buying separate tickets. The prices in this table alone cannot calculate savings for any individual traveller.
Putting the pass into an itinerary
Mark all days on which you intend to take JR services, then follow these steps:
- Check eligibility: Establish whether you hold a non-Japanese passport before planning an itinerary around an ineligible ticket.
- Mark the direction: Decide whether the main route is Noboribetsu, Furano or a wider range of Hokkaido regions.
- Count consecutive days: Group the possible pass-use dates together and compare a 4-day option with 5-, 7- or 10-day options.
- Exclude uncovered services: Keep the Hokkaido Shinkansen, Sapporo subway and tram out of the JR pass portion of the budget.
- Compare prices last: Check individual train services and separate fares so the pass price is not mistaken for the full transport expense.
Notes
These are adult advance-purchase prices checked 2026-10-28. Changes to charges, eligibility or coverage would change the comparison. Recheck JR Hokkaido’s official ticket information before departure. This article concerns Hokkaido passes; for nationwide arrangements, see JR Pass and regional passes.
